Here come the next wave of selfie-centric smartphones, the OPPO R9s and OPPO R9s Plus. These handsets build upon the original R9 duo’s formula with a little more kick added to the mix. Here are the details.

Since they’re selfie-centric devices, both of these handsets come with 16-megapixel selfie cameras for all the detailing your face requires. But, this time, instead of relegating the smaller smartphone’s primary camera to a 13-megapixel unit, both the R9s and R9s Plus have 16-megapixel f/1.7 Sony IMX398 rear cameras too. These shooters have dual-focus technology which is 40% faster than PDAF. What sets the two units apart is the fact that the R9s comes with electronic image stabilisation while the R9s Plus is sporting optical image stabilisation.

Spec-wise, the smaller R9s will get a 5.5-inch Full HD display in front with Gorilla Glass 5 protection and a Snapdragon 625 processor on the inside paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD). It’s also got a fingerprint scanner in front, a 3,010 mAh battery (with VOOC Flash Charge support) and support for dual SIM via a hybrid SIM tray.

The larger R9s Plus, on the other hand, will feature a 6-inch Full HD panel in front with the newly launched Snapdragon 653 processor, which gives about 10% more oomph, running inside. It will also pack 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage which you can further expand via a microSD card slot like the R9s.

Keeping the lights on is a larger 4,000 mAh battery (also with VOOC Flash Charge support), while a front-mounted fingerprint scanner takes care of biometric security. In the software department, the R9s Plus will come running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box with OPPO’s colorOS 3.0 running on top, much like the R9s.

OPPO didn’t really redesign the R9s and R9s Plus, however. It still looks pretty much like the old R9, with a rounded metal construction. The most obvious difference is the “redesigned” antenna lines which are now less obvious because they’re three thin lines instead of one thick one.

The R9s and R9s Plus will come in three colours — black, gold, rose gold. Both handsets will go on sale in China on the 28th of October and will be priced at CNY2,799 (around RM1,738) for the R9s and CNY3,499 (around RM2,172) for the R9s Plus.

In Malaysia, the previous R9 was renamed the F1 Plus but there is no indication on whether the new R9s will be renamed the F1s Plus if it ever makes it out of China. Still, considering the fact that OPPO’s new F1s is an updated F1, it’s possible that the R9s may make it to our shores as the F1s Plus.
