No one is a stranger to Xiaomi’s affordable smartphones, and it looks like they’re going to attempt to release an even cheaper Redmi smartphone that will be similar to the current Redmi 2.

The rumoured specs of the mystery phone includes a 4.7 inch 720p display, 1GB RAM with 8GB built in storage, 4G LTE and a 8MP/2MP camera combo as well as running on Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box. Powering the whole thing will be a quad-core Leadcore LC1860 processor clocked at 1.6GHz instead of a Snapdragon 410 unit that’s running on the Redmi 2.

The chipset however is probably what will be the driving factor in the final price, with companies resorting to using MediaTek chips as opposed to the more expensive Qualcomm ones. The mystery smartphone could cost as low as 399 CNY, which is less than RM 300.

However, in a recent update, CEO Lei Jun mentioned that it is impossible for them to come out with a 399 CNY phone as they would need to maintain a certain level of quality experience. The only question now is how well the Leadcore would hold up in terms of performance and stability.
