VIDEO: Sneak peek at Project Ara’s Modular Smart Phone development

Motorola and PhoneBloks have collaborated in building a true modular smart phone under Project Ara. Most smart phone users would dispose their device when they upgrade and Project Ara aims to prolong the device lifespan with the use of interchangeable blocks. For example if you need a better camera, you can replace them like Lego blocks at the rear. The possibility is endless and users may easily upgrade the battery and processor as well.

Now they have released a video introducing the team and it includes some testing footages of its modular design. The swappable modules are kept in place using electro-permanent magnets. Design wise, the modular block design itself is aesthetically unique and they would want that to be visible in the final product without concealing it with a case. The video also shows 3 different board sizes available which offers freedom of choosing the ideal display size.
