Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
The Mi MIX 3 is currently the best smartphone Xiaomi has ever made. The large display dominates the entire front and it no longer has a thick chin in the bottom like its previous MIX models. To solve the selfie camera conundrum, Xiaomi has gone with a manual slider mechanism which hides its dual-front camera setup.
The MIX 3 is currently officially on sale only in China. If you can’t wait to get your hands on the device, you can now buy imported units from Mobile2Go.
Since I started work at SoyaCincau, only two smartphones have really, truly blown me away. One of them was the OPPO Find X — with all of its motorised camera madness — while the other was the original Mi MIX. Yes, that jaw-dropping near bezel-less smartphone that was made almost entirely out of ceramic. It was horribly impractical, ridiculously fragile and had a really dumb selfie camera placement, but I loved that phone to bits because it pretty much spat in the face of convention.
That’s why I was so disappointed when I saw the Mi MIX 2 — because it felt like Xiaomi wanted to push sales numbers more than they wanted to push the envelop — and why I was also so worried that this philosophy would carry over to its successor, the Mi MIX 3. Today, I got to spend some time with the MIX 3 and I’m relieved to report that this isn’t the case…not entirely, anyway. In fact, it looks like Xiaomi found a neat way to balance the two philosophies.
The Mi MIX 3 isn’t just Xiaomi’s best full-screen smartphone with a 93.4% screen to body ratio, but it also carries their best camera set up yet. The front gets a 24MP + 2MP dual-camera combo that’s hidden underneath a sliding mechanism, while the rear comes with a 12MP f/1.8 + 12MP f/2.4 configuration.
When the device was announced, DxOMark Mobile had also published its Mi MIX 3 camera review. According to them, the Xiaomi full-screen device is among the top 5 best smartphones on their list.
The Xiaomi Mi MIX was one of the first modern smartphones to push the boundaries of a bezel-less display. The screen stretches all the way to the top edges of the device, however, there’s a thick bottom chin which houses the front camera.
When Xiaomi introduced the Mi MIX 2 and MIX 2S, it felt like Xiaomi is turning their “concept” smartphone into a conventional device. The bezels got thicker and they still retain the bottom chin. Next to the new vivo NEX and OPPO Find X, the Mi MIX doesn’t feel that special anymore but that is all about to change with the new one. A couple of photos that alleged to be the Mi MIX 3 have surfaced online and from the looks of it, Xiaomi might have just made the perfect “Full Screen” smartphone.
