Stealing an opponent’s thunder is not uncommon but jumping head first into a the storm with two other big names is pushing the boundaries.
Sony has just laid out its calling card and they’ll be vying the attention of tech sites at the same conference as Samsung and LG; sending out invitations for a special press conference a day after its two competitors intend to release their biggest devices of the year.
Sony Malaysia has finally brought its latest flagship, the Sony Xperia Z3+ to Malaysia. This is their updated waterproof flagship that’s thinner, lighter and faster than the previous Xperia Z3. Like other flagship smart phones, it carries a RM2,599 price tag and for the Malaysian market, we are getting the Dual-SIM version.
The Xperia Z3+ looks similar to the previous model from the exterior but it gets some notable differences, including a capless micro USB port which makes charging hassle free. Powering the device is a Snapdragon 810 Octa-Core processor that’s mated to 3GB of RAM.
If you’re looking for the best of Sony, it looks like the Xperia Z3+ won’t be launched in Malaysia anytime soon. However the folks at DirectD are now offering imported units which comes in either single SIM or Dual-SIM variants.
The Xperia Z3+ is offered at RM2,599, which is the same price as the Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9+ flagships that are being sold officially in Malaysia. For the Xperia Z3+ Dual-SIM version, it is offered slightly higher at RM2,699. Since this isn’t an official Sony Malaysia set, DirectD is giving its own 2 year warranty.
Sony has been under the radar lately and their latest flagship, the Xperia Z4 was announced without much fanfare in Japan last month. The Xperia Z4 is basically an incremental update with a newer Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB RAM and the microUSB charging port is now exposed while maintaining its class leading waterproof capabilities.
While the Xperia Z4 was launched as a Japan only device, it looks like they are making it available in more markets as Sony is organising a press event in Hong Kong and Taiwan sometime next week.
The Xperia Z4 is going to hit the market internationally as the Xperia Z3+, with the phone going by it’s original name only in Japan.
While the Xperia Z3+ isn’t Sony’s big flagship smartphone for this year, it’s just a tiny update to what’s in it’s predecessor the Xperia Z3. The phone will have a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor mated to 3GB RAM as well as a 20.7 megapixel rear shooter, 5 megapixel front camera as well as 32GB expandable storage. The screen will be a 5.2 inch 1080p display and it will also sport a moderately sized 2,930mAh battery as well as run on Android 5.0 Lollipop at launch.
The Xperia Z3+ will still feature the same OmniBalance design with the rest of the family, albeit a little bit chunkier at 6.9mm thick.
The phone is expected to have a May release.
Out of the blue without much fanfare, Sony Mobile has officially announced its new Xperia Z4 flagship smart phone. Like the recently announced HTC One M9, the Xperia Z4 looks similar to its predecessor model, Xperia Z3 but it gets some incremental updates under the hood.
The front retains the same 5.2″ display that does a full HD resolution of 1920×1080. Powering the device is Qualcomm’s top end 2.0GHz Snapdragon 810 Octa-Core processor that’s mated with 3GB of RAM. The on-board storage however gets an increase to 32GB and it has an expandable microSD slot that supports 128GB extra. As you would expect from a flagship Sony Xperia, it also gets water and dust resistance at IPX5/8, IP6X.
Sony still hasn’t launched any flagship smartphones this year and we are now in the second quarter of 2015.
But according to a report from Japan, Sony may be announcing a new phone on the coming 20th April which is essentially next week. The new flagship is predicted to be the long awaited Sony Xperia Z4 but there’s also a chance that it might be the Sony Xperia Z3 Neo instead, which has also been leaked very recently.
It’s still up in the air because not all the rumours and leaks add up but Sony has been rumoured to no longer be launching more than one flagship at a time so which phone exactly will be getting the announcement next week is up to debate, if the phone is even the Z4 or the Z3 Neo at all.
After leaks that gave us a peek at the upcoming Sony Xperia Z4 specs and press renders it looks like the real deal has been spotted in the wild. The new images basically cover all the bases of the phone, showing that it’s seriously sticking to Sony’s Xperia Z series styling from top to bottom, as well as an exposed microUSB port. With the amount of leaks trickling out, it’s likely that the phone might be getting a launch, possibly very soon.
More images after the break.
