128GB 4th gen iPad now available for order from RM2,399

130205-apple-malaysia-ipad-4-128GB

The recently announced 4th generation iPad with Retina Display in 128GB capacity is now available in Malaysia through the online Apple Store.

In terms of pricing, the 128GB WiFi only version is going at RM2,399 while the WiFi + Cellular version with micro-SIM slot is priced at RM2,799. Pricing for other models remain unchanged with the entry level 16GB WiFi priced at RM1,499 while the WiFi + Cellular version at RM1,899. Admittedly, this isn’t a model for everyone as the pricing is rather close to a full fledged notebook. However going by cost per GB, the 128GB WiFi gives about RM18.72/GB as compared to the 16GB WiFi that costs an average of RM93.68/GB. If storage on a tablet is crucial, then the 128GB might be something worth considering especially when there’s no expandable storage.

According to the online Apple Store, both models start shipping in 1-3 business days which means you probably get it after the upcoming Chinese New Year holidays. For more information or to place your order, head over to the Apple Store Malaysia iPad page.

iPad with Retina display gets 128GB variant

130129-ipad-4-128GB-retina-display

Apple has just announced its 128GB model of the new 4th generation iPad with Retina display, doubling the capacity from its biggest 64GB model. As expected, it will be available in both black and white colours in either WiFi or WiFi + Cellular model. On the inside, there’s no changes and it retains the same A6X chip and its 9.7″ display that pushes 2048 X 1536 pixels resolution.

In terms of pricing, it is an extra US$100 on top of the 64GB model with the 128GB WiFi version priced at US$799, while the 128GB WiFi + Cellular version priced at US$929. Pricing of its 16GB, 32GB and 64GB remains unchanged at this point, so those who have just purchased one recently can breathe a sigh of relief.

If it comes to Malaysia, it is expected to be priced at RM2,399 (WiFi) and RM2,799 (WiFi+Cellular) based on the same incremental RM300 price difference across its models. The 128GB iPad will be available beginning next month on 5th February.

Could You Get Your Recently Purchased 3rd Gen iPad Replaced with the new 4th Gen Version?

There are reports coming from the US where Apple customers who’ve purchased the third generation iPad within 30 days are able to get the device replaced with the latest fourth generation version. Would Malaysians be able to swap their recently purchased third generation iPad with the new fourth-gen version?

The short answer is most probably not.

We called Apple customer support for some clarification and while they were willing to hear customers out on a case-to-case basis, the reality is this:

It will be more than 30 days till the fourth generation iPad hits Malaysia. This means by the time the new iPad gets here, your 30-day replacement window will very likely be up.

Even if your purchase is within the 30-day window when the fourth gen iPad is launched here, Apple is more likely attend to purchases made from the online Apple Store than the one made via authorised resellers. For iPads purchased via authorized Apple retailers, the chances of you scoring a free upgrade will be almost zero.

But we’ve heard of some interesting stories from people who bought their Apple gear from authorized resellers and still managed to get one-to-one swaps simply because they were not satisfied with their purchase. Of course these cases are few and far between, so you will have to be extremely lucky or persistent or both to get your recently purchased and already obsolete third generation iPad replaced with the new fourth generation one.

All we can say is, all the best!

By the numbers: New iPad and iPad mini specs compared

UPDATE: New iPad 4th Gen and iPad Mini comparison table updated. Added Galaxy Tab 7.7.

After the unveiling of the new iPad mini and 4th generation iPad, it is time for another round of comparison. We have compared the tablets with both the internal hardware as well as the exterior dimensions.

The new iPad mini comes with a slightly larger 7.9″ display that does 1024×768 resolution, which is the same resolution of its older iPad 2 of 9.7″. While that gives a higher pixel density of 163ppi (pixels per inch), it is behind the Nexus 7 of 216ppi due to its higher resolution of 1280×800. In terms of dimensions, the iPad mini is the thinnest and lightest of the lot at only 7.2mm thick and 308g heavy.

Moving on to the larger tablets, the new iPad in its 4th generation still holds the highest pixel density of 264ppi thanks to its higher than HD resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. As comparison, the closest rival in the form of ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity does a lower full HD resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. In terms of battery, the 9.7″ iPad is still the largest with a rated 10 hour battery life and as a result, it is also the heaviest in this comparison.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is a more unique offering with a included S-Pen stylus, 2GB of RAM and higher camera resolution of 8MP for the rear and 2MP at the front. In terms of 3G SIM sizes, the Android tablets are using the regular Mini-SIM while Apple is the only contender that uses micro-SIM. For the new iPad mini, it uses the latest nano-SIM, similar to the iPhone 5.
