The best and worst in tech (2017)

2017 was a fascinating year for smartphones and mobile tech in general. There were a lot of ups, a lot of downs and some pretty weird stuff along the way but there’s no denying that it was an eventful year.

Portrait Mode photos on the Google Pixel 2 look amazing

Generally, if you wanted blurry bokeh “Portrait Mode” photos from your smartphone, you’d need two lenses. But, when Google released their Pixel 2 smartphones, the company made a big deal out of how they could do so with one lens and machine learning.

Is it any good? Well, Google’s just released a whole bunch of photographs that showcases the Pixel 2’s portrait mode feature in action. And they look pretty amazing.

Google Pixel 2 gets highest score on DxOMark with just one main camera

The Google Pixel 2 has wrestled back its title of the highest rated smartphone camera by DxOMark Mobile. Their first generation Pixel had blown away the competition last year with a score of 89. It was the highest rated smartphone until the HTC U11, iPhone 8/8Plus and Galaxy Note8 came along.

As of yesterday, the iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy Note8 were the top rated smartphone cameras with a score of 94. Now both of these dual-camera flagships are overtaken by the Pixel 2’s new high-score of 98.

Ahead of its big reveal, we now get a full view of the duo thanks to none other than Evan Blass. These are the successors of last year’s Google Pixel/Pixel XL and they are manufactured by HTC and LG. As you would expect, both would be running on the very latest Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box.
