Is Google’s Night Sight better than Huawei’s Night Mode?

Watching the western media rave over Google‘s brand new Night Sight low-light photography feature that recently hit Pixel smartphones, there was really only one thought going through my mind: Isn’t this just Huawei‘s Night Mode but with a nicer name?  It sure as hell looks like like a similar concept is being applied, but in so many of the articles I’ve seen about it, Huawei’s name has been conveniently left out.

But, whatever. I’m not someone who’s into dwelling on conspiracy theories. The only thing I’m interested in finding out is whether Night Sight is better than Huawei’s Night Mode. Yup, you already know what that means: It’s camera comparison time.

iPhone XS Camera vs iPhone X, Note9 and P20 Pro

When the iPhone XS was announced, it retained a similar dual 12MP main camera configuration as last year’s iPhone X. On paper, it looks like nothing has changed, however, if you look deeper, Apple has actually made a couple of notable upgrades. This include larger pixels at 1.4-micron (iPhone X: 1.22 micron), a new Smart HDR feature and it uses a lot more machine learning thanks to its newer Apple A12 Bionic chip.

Samsung Galaxy Note9 Camera vs Huawei P20 Pro vs iPhone X

One of the interesting things we noticed when we tuned into the big Galaxy Note9 launch in New York last week was how little Samsung actually talked about the camera. There was no DxOMark score, no huge segment comparing it and its competitors, nor was there much emphasis on the handset’s camera hardware.

Was Samsung unconfident with the Galaxy Note9’s camera performance? Does this best-Note-ever actually have a sub-par camera in its class? Does the Note9’s camera actually suck?

Harrowing times, I know. But we thought we’d find out for ourselves by pitting the Galaxy Note9 with the best smartphone cameras we could find in our smartphone stable. Here’s how the Note9 stacks up to the best.

UPDATED: SoyaCincau’s best smartphones under RM1,200 (2nd half, 2018)

What a year it has been so far since the last time we published our best smartphones under RM1,200 (2018 edition). Here’s our ultimate budget smartphone guide Part 2.
