After dropping the full spec-sheet of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, reliable leakster Roland Quandt has also revealed the hardware specs of the two smaller models – the Galaxy S21 and S21+. Unlike its predecessor, the smaller S21 models no longer come with a curved display and both feature a flat screen which could be good news for some users.
Galaxy S21
The Galaxy S21 is the smallest of the lot and it comes with a 6.2″ display that pushes a Full HD+ resolution of 2400×1080 pixels instead of a higher Quad HD+ resolution of 3200×1440 pixels that’s currently offered on the Galaxy S20. However, the good news is that it retains a high 120Hz refresh rate with its Dynamic AMOLED 2x panel. Like the Galaxy Note 20 series, the phone uses Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus which offers improved drop and scratch resistance.
Under the hood, the European (likely for Malaysia as well) units will run on Samsung’s new Exynos 2100 chipset that’s manufactured based on a 5nm process. Similar to the S20, the S21 still comes with 8GB of RAM and it’s offered in either 128GB or 256GB storage options. Unfortunately, it appears that Samsung no longer provides the option to expand storage via a microSD card.
In the camera department, the S21 series get a triple-camera setup that sits in a rather flush looking camera bump that flows nicely to the side frame. The main camera is a 12MP f/1.8 shooter and it gets a higher resolution 64MP sensor for telephoto. There’s also another 12MP camera for ultra-wide-angle shots. The cameras use Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) and it comes with a hybrid-optic-zoom feature.
For selfies, the S21 settles for a 10MP shooter, which is lower resolution than the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 40MP front camera. As you would expect from a Samsung flagship phone, it still features stereo speakers, NFC with Samsung Pay and IP68-rated dust and water resistance. Powering the S21 is a 4,000mAh battery which supports both wireless and fast wireless charging.
In terms of colours, the S21 will be available in Grey, White, Pink and Purple. According to Roland, the device will be offered for EUR 849 (about RM4,206) for the base storage and it will cost EUR 50 (about RM248) extra for the 256GB variant.
Galaxy S21+
Moving up a notch is the Galaxy S21+. Essentially, the internals are identical to the smaller S21 except that it gets a larger 6.7″ screen with a 120Hz refresh rate that also pushes a lower Full HD+ resolution. On top of that, the device also gets a larger 4,800mAh battery which is about 6% bigger than the S20+.
In terms of colours, the Galaxy S21+ will be offered in Silver, Black and Purple. The device is said to be priced at EUR 1,049 (about RM5,196) in Europe for 128GB storage and about EUR 1,099 (about RM5,444) for 256GB version. Do note that European pricing is much more expensive than Malaysia and it will be cheaper when it goes on sale in our local market.
The Galaxy S21 series is expected to be revealed on the 14th of January 2021 and the Korean smartphone maker will provide more details for its new Exynos 2100 chip on the 12th of January. It is speculated that the pre-order window is going to be short and this could mean that you might be able to buy the Galaxy S21 in Malaysia by the end of January 2021.
As confirmed by Roland earlier, the Galaxy S21 will not ship with charger and headphones in the box, at least for the European market. This is a similar move made by Apple, and Xiaomi has recently confirmed that the charger will not be included on their new Mi 11 flagship smartphone. Since Samsung is using the USB Power Delivery standard, you can get a third party USB-C PD Charger with 45W output to get the full fast charging potential for your new Samsung device.
