Singaporean finds empty PS5 box in trash, sells it for almost RM100 on Carousell

The Sony PlayStation 5, or the PS5, was anticipated by fans for years and years, which has led to various stock outages in many countries—including Malaysia. Meanwhile, Sony Malaysia earlier disappointed customers by confirming that there wouldn’t be any new units for in-store purchases upon launch (pre-order customers picked up their new consoles on the day).

So, what if you were looking for a PS5 to gift to a special somebody, and you didn’t want to pay an extortionate price for an imported unit? This Singaporean man found a rather poor alternative in his trash, although he chose to sell this “gift” on popular e-commerce platform, Carousell, instead.

Last week, Leslie Koh was disposing of his rubbish on his “void deck” (an open space found on the ground floor of most HDB flats in Singapore), when he found a “pristine” PS5 box that someone had thrown away. Why someone would throw away a box for a brand new console, we’ll probably never know, but Koh spotted an opportunity for a Christmas prank within the rubbish.

As a joke, the Singaporean man put the box up for sale on Carousell (“Box Only”, of course), and within a day, a potential buyer surfaced. Koh was naturally skeptical—after all, who would pay SGD 30 (~RM91) for an empty box?

“I SOLD IT. A BOX THAT I PICKED IT FOR NOTHING AND MADE $30. Here’s what I’ve learnt: Opportunities are everywhere, you just need to keep your eyes open. One man’s rubbish is indeed another man’s treasure. Never try, never know.”

Koh also has a warning for those of you who may be hoping for a new PS5 for Christmas this year:

“Manage your expectations if you’re getting a PS5 for Christmas. It might just be the box.”

In any case, if you’re thinking of picking up the Sony PlayStation 5 (when stocks are replenished), the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is officially priced in Malaysia at RM1,869, and the version with an Ultra HD Blue-ray drive is going for RM2,299. To find out more, click here.
