After a series of finger pointing by Ministers, the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Chairman of the Board of Directors released an official statement on Twitter. The statement confirms that Veveonah Mosibin did in fact sit for her final semester exams.
“After meeting the TNC & Pengarah Pusat Asasi Sains, UMS today, I would like to confirm that student Veveonah Mosibin sat for her final semester exams (online) from 9/6 till 12/6/20,” Tweeted Chairman Masidi Manjun.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin previously claimed that Sabahan student Veveonah Mosibin did not sit for her online exam when she made a video herself climbing up a tree to get internet connectivity. He also said that he got the information from the Kudat MP Abdul Rahim Bakri.
In turn, Abdul Rahim Bakri posted a long Facebook post insisting that Veveonah did not sit for any university examinations. He also said that the findings were based on ‘investigations’, but deleted the post a while later.
Netizens have jumped to defend Veveonah following the Ministers’ claims. Several Twitter users—including fellow students and teachers at UMS—say that they know her, have exams together, and are appalled that she’s been accused of lying.
After trying to get a statement from a UMS faculty member, the faculty member passed me Masidi Manjun’s Twitter posts—stating that the Tweets are official statements. Masidi also mentioned that he would “not say something that’s not factual”. His statement was retweeted by UMS’ official account.
The Chairman’s statement proves that Veveonah did sit for her final semester exams online, and that her viral video was posted just a day after the last day of her exams. He also added that “she was an exemplary student and has been offered to do Marine Science degree course in UMS.”
The Chairman was also openly responding to Tweets left by netizens. When a netizen asked Masidi—who is also from the Barsatu political party—why an MP from his party made such remarks, he replied saying “it happens in all parties”.
The MCMC has issued a statement that clarifies the status of the National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan Phase 1 (NFCP 1). NFCP 1 will be priortised for Sabah, and there will also be plans for a new 4G tower to be erected at Veveonah’s village at Kampung Sapatalang in Pitas, Sabah.
