Xperia 5 II: Sony to shake things up with 120Hz refresh rate display

Sony has always done things a little differently when it comes to their mobile devices in recent years. However, we could be set to see the company finally hopping onboard the high refresh rate train for its next flagship phone release: the Sony Xperia 5 II.

A leaked video from Android Headlines has surfaced, along with details and specs for the second generation Xperia 5. As expected, the Xperia 5 II looks like it will be a smaller version of the Xperia 1 II, and you’ll still get the cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio that recent Xperia phones have used.

One of the highlights of the specs revealed is obviously the 120Hz display. For the larger—and presumably more expensive—Xperia 1 II, Sony used “motion blur reduction technology” to provide a smoother experience. Now, we could be seeing the smaller flagship sporting a higher refresh rate (just like many 2020 flagship phones and tablets).

You’re looking at a 6.1″ Full HD+ HDR OLED panel, while there is also a 240Hz touch sampling rate. Dimensions are still pretty compact too, at 158 x 68 x 8mm. Under the hood, a Snapdragon 865 (not the Plus) powers the device, along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage—expandable via microSD.

The SD865 also means that 5G connectivity will be supported on the Xperia 5 II, and there’s also an averagely-sized 4,000Ah battery which supports USB-C PD for fast-charging.

The rear camera setup has three cameras: a 12MP f/2.4 wide main shooter, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto lens which offers 3X optical zoom. 4K HDR at 120fps is also supported, which means that you’ll be able to shoot in slow motion at 4K resolution.

And, guess what? There will be a 3.5mm headphone jack on the Xperia 5 II. A headphone jack on a 2020 flagship device—imagine the novelty of that.

The Sony Xperia 5 II will reportedly launch on the 17th of September 2020, instead of the IFA next week. However, Sony hasn’t officially confirmed that the device will be released then, although press invites have already been sent out for an Xperia announcement on that date.
