Oppo recently launched two of its latest 5G-ready smartphones the Reno 4 Pro and Reno 4 in China. The announcement comes not long after Oppo introduced the Reno 3 and Reno 3 Pro in Malaysia in May 2020.

Though the timing of these launches are very close, it is worth bearing in mind that the models in China are different that their international counterparts. The Reno 3 and Reno 3 Pro, introduced in Dec 2019 in China, used a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset. But the models launched in Malaysia were equipped with MediaTek Helio P90 processors that are not 5G-ready.

With that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at several features the Reno 4 Pro and Reno 4 both share. This includes triple camera setups, in-display fingerprint readers as well as support for Oppo’s 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology.

Both the Reno 4 Pro and Reno 4 are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G chip. While the Snapdragon 765G is not a flagship processor, it boasts an integrated 5G modem for improved power efficiency. This also the same processor that is rumoured to be used in other prominent handsets including Google’s Pixel 5.

Oppo said the Reno 4 Pro and Reno 4’s main camera and ultra-wide cameras will take advantage of its Ultra Steady Video 3.0 to deliver stabilised video footage. They will also come preloaded with the SoLoop video editor app to add filters to your video as well as a smart video generator.

Both phones will also run on the Android 10 with Oppo’s ColorOS 7.2 operating system running on top. The Reno 4 Pro and Reno 4’s batteries may differ slightly but the 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging technology is claimed by Oppo to charge the phone back up to 60% with just 15 minutes of charging. A full charge, meanwhile, can be achieved with a 36-minute charge.

Oppo Reno 4 Pro

Let’s start with the Reno 4 Pro. It features a 6.5″ Full HD+ (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) AMOLED curved display with a smooth 90Hz refresh rate. Oppo adds that the screen is HDR10+ certified, offering greater dynamic range and more realistic colours in videos and is low blue light certified. There is also a single hole-punch cutout that reveals a 32MP selfie camera.

The Reno 4 Pro is also very slim and lightweight, measuring just 7.6mm thin and 172g. It differentiates itself from the Reno 4 with its mesmerising colour-shifting glass back. This is achieved using Oppo’s Reno Glow crystal drilling process, making the material resistant to fingerprints. The Reno 4 Pro comes with up to 12GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 256GB of UFS2.1 storage.

One of the main highlights of the Reno 4 Pro is its triple camera array. It consists of a 48MP main camera that supports Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS). There is also a 12MP ultra-wide camera that utilises a Sony IMX708 sensor that shoots 120° wide images as well as videos up to 4K quality at 30 frames per second (fps). The ultra-wide camera also offers an enhanced night mode that uses an in-house developed night scene video algorithm and is supported by laser focusing technology.

Rounding out the Reno 4 Pro’s cameras is a 13MP telephoto camera for capturing faraway subjects. There is, however, no information on the camera’s actual zoom range. It has a 4,000mAh battery.

Oppo Reno 4

The Reno 4 may not be the headline leading device as the Reno 4 Pro but it has its qualities. This includes a 6.4″ Full HD+ (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) AMOLED display. While it doesn’t have HDR10+ certification or a 90Hz display, the Reno 4 has dual hole-punch cutouts that houses two cameras: a 32MP selfie camera and a secondary 2MP camera.

It boasts a slim 7.8mm body that weighs just 183g. Internally, it comes with up to 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and up to 256GB of UFS2.1 storage. It has a slightly larger 4,020mAh battery.

Just like the Reno 4 Pro, the Reno 4 has three cameras on the back. It has a 48MP main camera, that takes advantage of Oppo’s enhanced night scene video algorithm, and laser focusing technology. It can record videos up to 4K resolutions at 30fps. It instead uses an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP monochromatic sensor, instead of a telephoto camera.

Pricing and availability

The Reno 4 Pro comes in five colour variations: Galactic Blue, Sparkling Red, Space Black, Space White and Green Glitter. Pre-orders have already begun in China. Sale of the phone will begin on 12 June for every colour except Green Glitter which is set to go on sale on 18 June. Below is the price
