At today’s press update, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that all barbers, hair and beauty salon, as well as optometry shops, will not be allowed to operate during the Movement Control order. The directive is applicable throughout Malaysia and it was ordered by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

According to the Senior Minister, the government is aware of the concerns raised about the reopening of barbers and hair salon. He said that the government is always listening to the views of its citizens and they are also advised by experts as well as NGOs on issues such as this.

Ismail Sabri Yaakob also said that he hopes the new directive answers all questions and concerns on the barber and hair salon issue. He stresses again that all hair-cutting services are not allowed during the MCO period.

The Prime Minister had recently announced a further 2 weeks extension last Friday. At the moment the MCO is scheduled to be lifted on the 28th April 2020.

Last week, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry had announced that several sectors will be lifted subject to applications via the Ministry. According to the announcement made by Trade Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali, the selected sectors permitted to operate include barbers, electronic shops, construction, aviation and shops that provide full laundry services (non-self service).

The Ministry of Health has advised against the reopening of hair salon and other industries and he urged the government to postpone the decision until data confirms that the country has recovered. Yesterday, Ismail Sabri Yaakob had emphasised that barbers are not automatically allowed to operate and any application will be limited only to green zones.
