Trump reverses ban on Huawei

Huawei can finally breathe a sigh of relief as U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will allow the Chinese telecommunications giant to buy products from American suppliers. This was revealed after talks with China’s President Xi Jinping during the Group of 20 Summit in Osaka, Japan.

He told reporters “U.S. companies can sell their equipment to Huawei… there’s no great, national emergency problem”, during a news conference. The two leaders have included Huawei in their talks.

“I said that’s O.K., that we will keep selling that product, these are American companies that make these products. That’s very complex, by the way”, said Trump. “I’ve agreed to allow them to continue to sell that product so that American companies will continue.”

Donald Trump’s administration had previously announced a ban on 20th May which prevented American companies from dealing with Huawei. The ruling had affected multiple companies including Google, Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom. The very next day, they had announced a 90-day delay as more time is needed to maintain existing networks in the US and to minimise disruption for its customers.

With this latest development, Huawei can continue to get hardware supplies and software support that it needs for its products. Prior to this, Huawei has been labelled as a security threat by the US due to its purported links to the Chinese government, a claim which the company has strongly denied. The US government has provided no evidence and Huawei has also taken legal action, claiming that the ban is unconstitutional.
