You don’t have to buy a screen protector for the Samsung Galaxy S10 and S10+

A screen protector is one of the most popular accessories you’d get with your new smartphone but with the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ you don’t have to. This is because the two devices already come with a screen protector pre-applied right from the factory.

Samsung has confirmed this in a notice posted on its user community website.

“Samsung’s upcoming new flagship Galaxy S10 will be shipped with a factory pre-installed screen protector manufactured by Samsung,” the notice said.

The decision to include a pre-installed screen protector for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ is to ensure that the in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner works as it should.

If you decide to get an aftermarket screen protector for your brand-new Galaxy S10 or Galaxy S10+, Samsung can’t guarantee that the fingerprint scanner will work with the screen protector, so fair warning there.

Don’t get a screen protector for your Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+

The Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ are the first smartphones in the world to use an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner. The benefits of having an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner as opposed to the conventional optical in-display fingerprint scanner used by several brands today, are improved speed and security. The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner works faster than an optical fingerprint scanner and it doesn’t depend on an actual image of your fingerprint thus making it more difficult to defeat through duplication.

But the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner’s precision presents one big problem: the scanner is sensitive to additional layers introduced between the scanner and the finger that is being scanned. This means that using a third-party screen protector will very likely render the fingerprint scanner useless. At least for now.

I’m sure third-party screen protector brands will catch up soon and start offering screen protectors that are compatible with the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ in a few months.

Durable screen featuring Gorilla Glass 6

The Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and Gorilla Glass 5 for the rear.

Gorilla Glass 6 is one of the strongest glass composites made by Corning, the company claims that Gorilla Glass 6 is almost twice as strong as Gorilla Glass 5 when it comes to withstanding consecutive drops from a height of one metre. Gorilla Glass 6 is also highly scratch resistant and able to retain its strength better after a drop than its predecessor.

In his latest durability test video, Zack Nelson from the JerryRigEverything YouTube channel showed that the Galaxy S10 is as well-constructed as the Galaxy S devices before it.

In the test, the Gorilla Glass 6 display on the Galaxy S10 resisted scratches as expected.

With the pre-installed screen protector and Gorilla Glass 6 combined, you really don’t have to worry too much about the display on your Galaxy S10 or Galaxy S10+ being scratched.
