Apple’s new recycling robot can dismantle 200 iPhone devices in an hour

Apple Daisy iPhone Recycling Robot

Remember Liam, the recycling robot? In conjunction with Earth Day, Apple has introduced a newer robot and it’s called Daisy. Just like its predecessor, Daisy can take apart high-quality materials from old devices which other manufacturers can’t. On top of that, it can disassemble up to 200 iPhone devices per hour. That’s about 18 seconds per iPhone.

New smartphones would require rare materials such as rare earths and tungsten. By recycling, we can reduce mining by taking them from devices that we don’t need. We all know that old devices still carry a lot of valuable materials but the challenge is recovering them is rather complex and it is hard to do it effectively.

Apple’s Daisy can remove more materials than before and Apple claims that it is the most innovative and efficient way to reclaim more valuable materials stored in the iPhone. For every 100,000 iPhone devices, Daisy can recover the following:

Aluminum 1900 kg
Gold 0.97 kg
Silver 7.5 kg
Rare Earths 11 kg
Tungsten 93 kg
Copper 710 kg
Palladium 0.10 kg
Tin 42 kg
Cobalt 770 kg
Tantalum 1.8 kg

From now until 30 April, Apple will donate to the Conversation International for every device they receive for trade-in or recycling. If your device doesn’t have any trade-in value, Apple will still recycle it for free.

Unfortunately, this specific Apple program isn’t available in Malaysia. They do have it in Singapore and you can get up to S$600 in value for smartphones or up to S$415 for tablets.

If you haven’t seen it yet, below is the video of Liam from two years ago:
