Acer Iconia Tab A500 now in Malaysia

Acer Malaysia has announced via Facebook that the Acer Iconia Tab A500 is launching today. The Iconia Tab A500 is a Android Tablet which runs on the latest Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system.

Specification wise, this 10″ tablet is no slouch with its 1GHz Tegra 2 Dual Core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. If you need more space, you can expand via microSD up to 32GB. It spots a 10.1″ display with resolution of 1280×800 and comes with a 5MP camera with assisted flash at the back and a front facing 2MP camera.

Connectivity wise, it comes with all the bells and whistles you would expect such as micro USB, WiFi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and HDMI output with dual display support. It is 13.3mm thick and weights about 765 grams. As comparison, the Motorola Xoom is 13mm thick with 730 grams weight. The full technical specifications can be downloaded here.

The main highlight of the Iconia Tab A500 isn’t just about the hardware or the form factor. With the latest tablet OS and dual-core processor, the Acer Iconia Tab A500 is priced at an astonishing RM1599 outright. Although Acer launch event is today, we’re told that it is already available on retail this week including SenHeng which even offers a 36 months installment plan of RM44.42 a month.

This is serious value for money especially when it is priced the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and about RM500 cheaper than the Motorola Xoom. Even when compared to the iPad 2, it is RM200 cheaper than its 32GB WiFi equivalent. We haven’t seen the device yet but hopefully we can get a hands-on to find out its build quality.

Special thanks to Ian and Ken for giving us a heads up in the comments!

Head after the break for the commercial video.

Looks good, but I'm still waiting for the Eee Pad Transformer's pricing here in Malaysia.

That's cheap!

yes, at least something good rather than buy from the bullshit telco

So RM1599 is as cheap as they can get to compete with the iPad and Xoom. It somewhat proves that the RM1499 entry price for the iPad is tough to beat.

Definitely hard to beat considering third parties are involved in bringing the products to the local market. Apple has outdone themselves this round, even I'm surprised they could actually be affordable for once which they aren't known for.

Hrmm… Considering the iPad 2 WiFi 32 GB is RM1799, while the Iconia A500 has 32GB at RM1599, I say the Iconia is cheaper, specs for specs?

Of coz the Iconia doesn't have a 16GB version. The iPad 2 can be had for a cheaper price, but at a lower storage as well.

I say it's good for the consumer!

P/S: Android tablets drop prices several times a year, while the iPad only drops price once a year.

Indeed, good for consumer and us.

IMHO, it's not really suitable to compare specs to specs for these kind of devices because the whole package matters (weight, storage, thickness, accessories, apps ecosystem, product availability).

the rock

can use 2 make and receive phone calls.

SC, thanks for the info. hope to see SoyaCincau review on this tab as well

Apple has been very aggressive in pricing their Ipod, Ipad etc recently. They seem to understand the local mindset and market their product at exactly the right price to ensure their competitors have a hard time competing. However, it does seem that the potential tablet market is so big that the vendors, regardless whether it is Apple, Acer or Asus, have problem making their tablets FAST enough to meet the demand. So it sorts of like pure profit for all of them, as if they make it, someone will buy it and it becomes a profit.

This also mean profit for many local middlemen vendors who is just retailing such tablets. Samsung, Motorola, ViewSonic however, does seem to miss their mark as Samsung and Motorola has priced their tablet too expensive initially, ViewSonic simply fails to attract much attention with outdated OS. Sony and Dell will soon join the fray this year, but their past business practices are any indication, they will price it way too high also.

    Ya Man

Exactly, the tablet market is still effectively in it's infant stage and the adoption rate is astounding.

The HTC, Samsung, Motorola are over priced their products… Although I am not Apple fan, anyway thanks to iPad 2, make them not too demanding when price their product so that we afford to buy.

Price is very attractive, but I think the Acer offering is too big, too thick and too heavy when compared to the last tablet I got rid of, the iconic iPad1.

Finally, at least Acer set the price acceptable. Not like Maxis and Motorola. Still, waiting Eee Pad Transformer!
