Singapore welcomes Samsung Galaxy Beam – A smartphone with built-in projector!

While Malaysians get all excited about the not so revolutionary iPhone 4, Singaporeans get a phone that is really revolutionary.

Released last week with Singaporean telco StarHub is the Samsung Galaxy Beam – the world’s first smartphone with a built-in projector.

Running Android 2.1 powered by a 720MHz TI OMAP 3440 processor with 384MB RAM and on board GPU capable of processing 14 million polygons per second, the Galaxy Beam is packed with tech including a 3.7 inch Super AMOLED screen, 8MP camera with auto focus and flash. There’s also a forward facing camera for video calls. Connectivity wise, the Beam supports HSDPA up to 7.2Mbps and HSUPA up to 5.76Mbps, along with the standard array of EDGE and GPRS frequencies. There’s 16GB of on board memory with Micro SD expansion up to 32GB.

The built-in pico projector that can project images from 5 up to 50 inches wide. StarHub is bundling the Beam with its mobile TV service for as low as SG$0 depending on the plan the user subscribes to.

Given the fact that Maxis has a pretty decent mobile TV offering with its b.player application, and the fact that they are probably Malaysia’s most device rich telco at the moment, and the fact that they are the strongest supporter of Android devices; it’ll be interesting to see if Maxis is looking to offer the Galaxy Beam here.

If they do and if the performance of the Galaxy S is anything to go by, then there’s a lot to like about the Galaxy Beam. If they do, we can’t wait and we would love to get our hands on this device!
