Vlingo has released an interesting video demonstrating how its voice recognition feature is meant for everyone. Not only it is available for various smart phone models, it actually recognise accents pretty well.
For those that didn’t know, Vlingo is also pre-installed with Samsung smart phones as “Voice Talk”. Instead of pressing a button to activate, you can also activate Vlingo with magic word by saying “Hi Galaxy” or “Hi Vlingo”.
In our earlier hands-on with Siri, most location based functionalities are limited to the US. Having said that, Siri understands natural conversations as if you’re talking to a person instead of giving structured commands. This is particularly useful if you want Siri to set an appointment which is much faster than adding it on your calendar manually. You can read more about our Siri experience here.
Vlingo is available for free but with more functions reserved for paid version. It is available for Android, iOS and Blackberry. For more information, head over to Vlingo.

Check out the first of what will surely be a series of commercials for the new iPad. The focus is on the new iPad’s 2048 x 1536 pixel Retina Display and that’s pretty much expected as the new display will be a key selling point and one of the most visually dramatic and appealing feature when you first pick up the new iPad.
With a high definition display, improved graphic performance and an improved 5MP camera that can shoot 1080p videos, the new iPad brings enough improvements to bring the masses by the droves to Apple stores to get one but for us we expected much more. The “resolutionary” new iPad brings welcomed improvements to Apple’s iconic tablet but it is by no means the game changer that it used to be.
The iPad will still dominate the tablet market. Nothing on other tablet right now offer a more complete user experience. If anyone asks us which tablet to get, we’d still point them to the direction of the nearest Apple store but the same time we’d tell them to keep an eye on the horizon because the next big thing in tablets might be coming from somewhere unexpected.
What do you think about the new iPad? Yeah or meh? iPad 2 owners, will you make the move? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
In addition to the Xperia S and the Xperia U, Sony has also introduced the Xperia P, it’s multimedia-centric Android smartphone.
The Xperia P features a 4-inch 960×540 Reality Display with a new display technology that Sony calls “WhiteMagic” developed for excellent daylight viewing. At the Sony MWC press conference, where the device was unveiled, Sony’s CMO Steve Walker says the Xperia P is the “smartest and brightest smartphone display in the market”.
In addition to the display, Xperia P features an 8MP rear camera with Fast Capture and 1080p video recording, encased in an aluminium unibody design that carries the same design language as the Xperia S and Xperia U.
We’ll update the post with more details when we have them. Added specifications, photos and promotional videos for the Xperia P right after the jump.
While we’re tuning in live to the Sony press conference at Mobile World Congress, UK operator Three has snuck out a promotional video for the yet to be launched Xperia U.
The Xperia U follows the same design language as the Xperia S but brings with it a personality more suited to the young and style conscious with interchangeable colour caps at the bottom edge.
Another cool feature of the Xperia U is the transparent belt that now features a multi-colour LED array. When viewing pictures in the gallery app, the transparent belt changes colour to match with the dominant colour on the picture that you’re viewing. That’s a cool feature that we’re pretty sure many of you would like.
In terms of hardware, the Xperia U brings a 3.5-inch 854×480 pixel Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine, a 1Ghz dual-core processor and a 5MP rear camera with Fast Capture and 720p video recording.
Specifications plus more promotional videos of the Xperia U from Sony right after the jump.
All we can think of after watching this video is the Eee Pad Transformer Prime TF700T which was unveiled at CES. The Transformer Prime TF700T features a higher resolution 10.1-inch 1080p 1920×1200 SuperIPS+ display (the Transformer Prime TF201 that’s on sale right now has a 1280x and a revised rear cover for better GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth performance. The front camera has also been uprated to a 2MP unit from the 1.2MP shooter in the original Transformer Prime.
But then again, why tease a device that’s already been unveiled?
Speaking of teasers, ASUS also released a teaser video for its Padfone earlier. In case you’re wondering, the “1 + 1 + 1 = endless possibilities” suggests the Padfone consists of a phone, a tablet and a dock – or something like that.
We’re treating the review of the Sony Xperia S like a work in progress so expect more videos to come soon but in the meantime, have a look at this video where we talked briefly about the tweaks and enhancements Sony has made to the UX skin on the Xperia S. We also highlighted some minor gripes that we have with the device.
Despite that and despite the fact that we’ve only had a couple of days with the device, the Xperia S is potentially one of the best smartphone Sony (Ericsson) has ever produced. Stay tuned for our full review.

Unboxed: Sony Xperia S
With a 12.1MP camera, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of on board storage, the Sony Xperia S created quite a buzz when it was first officially unveiled at CES in January. We were pretty excited about the device too when we got our first hands-on at the Xperia S Asian launch in Shanghai.
In just over a month, the Xperia S is already here in Malaysia. The unit that we have is the same version that you will get in stores when the Xperia S goes on sale here and right out of the box, we noticed improvements from the early prototype units that we tested in Shanghai.
The camera performance is much better now but we will need more time to see how good the 12MP shooter on the Xperia S is. We will also compare the Xperia S with the Nokia N8 to see which 12MP shooter is the best — that’s going to be interesting.
Aside from the camera, where the Xperia S impressed us the most is in its the built quality and display. Sony really knows how to make a quality device and Xperia S feels like a million bucks with quality construction and utilising plastics that really feel premium to the touch.
The 4.3-inch screen on the Xperia S is currently the highest density screen you can get in the market, combine that with Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine image enhancement software and you get a truly mesmerizing display. Colours on the Xperia S are true-to-life vibrant, details are pin-sharp and the contrast really gives your great depth. We’ve only used the Xperia S for a few hours but we’re very inclined to say that the Xperia S has the best display you can get on an Android device. It’s something you must experience yourself to see what we mean.
Speaking of which, the Xperia S will be launching in Malaysia really soon. Sony is still tight-lipped on when exactly the launch will happen but we have a feeling the Xperia S will go on sale here sometime in early March. As always you can expect local operators to offer plans for the device as well. Question is of course, which operator will offer plans for the Xperia S. Right now, we don’t have enough info to tell you for sure.
So that’s pretty much it. Head on over to after the break for part two of the Xperia S unboxing video. As always, drop your questions in the comment section and we’ll try our best to answer them.
