Stealing an opponent’s thunder is not uncommon but jumping head first into a the storm with two other big names is pushing the boundaries.
Sony has just laid out its calling card and they’ll be vying the attention of tech sites at the same conference as Samsung and LG; sending out invitations for a special press conference a day after its two competitors intend to release their biggest devices of the year.
Yesterday the purported specs of the upcoming waterproof Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 was leaked by @evleaks and now official pictures of the tablet has finally emerged. Another source, @gadgetleaks has jumped in as well with additional press images of the upcoming tablet.
From the leaked images, the Xperia Tablet Z2 looks similar as the previous Xperia Tablet Z but now comes with an aluminium frame like the current Xperia Z1. The NFC sensor now appears to be located close to the sides, below its 8MP rear camera which seems to be a more practical placement than the current model. At the bottom, the Xperia Tablet Z2 also uses a similar looking dock connector as the current Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra.
The new tablet is said to be running on a faster 2.3GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB of RAM and it retains the similar sized 10.1″ Full HD display. The camera comes with a similar 8MP shooter for the rear and a front facing 2MP camera while the battery also is maintained with a 6,000mAh capacity. In terms of dimensions, the new tablet is going to be thinner and lighter. According to @gadgetleaks, the Xperia Tablet Z2 will be 6.4mm thick and weighs just 426 grams for the WiFi only unit and 439grams for the LTE version.
As comparison the iPad Air is 7.5mm thick and is heavier at 469 grams for WiFi and 478 grams for the cellular LTE version. Meanwhile the current Xperia Tablet Z model is 6.9mm thick and weighs 495 grams.

It has been a year since Sony launched its waterproof Xperia Tablet Z at MWC 2013. Now it seems that Sony is about to release a replacement model at the coming MWC 2014 and it could be called the Xperia Tablet Z2.
EVleaks has just tweeted what claims to be the specs of the upcoming waterproof tablet which is said to be running on a 2.3GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor with 3GB of RAM. The rest of the features appear to be unchanged with a 10.1″ Full HD display, 8MP rear camera and a front facing 2MP camera. It even maintains the same battery capacity of 6,000mAh. In terms of thickness, the new model is able to shred additional mm off with a purported 6.4mm thickness. As comparison, the current Xperia Tablet Z has a thickness of 6.9mm while the Xperia Z Ultra is at 6.5mm.
Apart from the processor and memory upgrade, we wonder if Sony is featuring front stereo speakers as seen in the leaked Xperia Z2 photos. The current Xperia Tablet Z features 4 speakers with 2 speakers placed on each corner. In addition, the new tablet is expected to run on the very latest Android 4.4.2 Jelly Bean.
If the new Xperia Tablet is announced at MWC 2014, we could expect it to launch in our region at next month’s Jakarta Sony event.
The Sony S1 and S2 Honeycomb tablets are something of a curiosity at the moment. Apart from some preliminary specs and some press handout pictures, not much is known about the two tablets that marks Sony’s first attempt at grabbing a piece of the tablet market pie.
While the tablet is set to launch sometime in September, Sony has started releasing a series of teaser videos to showcase some of the capabilities of the Honeycomb pair.
Although there’s a lot to look at in the videos, there’s nothing really telling when it comes to exposing details on the S1 and S2 tablets. There’s five videos in the series (excluding the prologue), guess we’ll have to wait just a little bit more to see if this Sony duo has what it takes to duke it out with the iPad 2 and the much-hyped Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.
There’s a very likely chance that these two tablets will make here. Question now is, will you wait a little longer to see what the Sony tablets have to offer or pounce on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 as soon as its launched here?

Sony today announced its foray into the hotly contested tablet market with two Honeycomb devices codenamed S1 and S2.
Sony positions the 9.4-inch S1 as a device that’s “optimized for rich media entertainment,” while the dual 5.5-inch screen S2 is designed to be “ideal for mobile communication and entertainment.”.
S1 has a 9.4-inch display for enjoying the web and rich content on a large screen. Its off-center of gravity design realizes stability and ease of grip as well as a sense of stability and lightness, offering comfortable use for hours.
S2 has two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded for easy portability. In contrast to existing tablets, its unprecedented dual screen presentation and usability allows its displays to be combined and used as a large screen or for different functions such as playing video on one screen while showing control buttons on the other.
The design of the S1 is typical Sony minimalist and we like that Sony designer have opted to stay away from a more conventional slab form factor to this “folded” form factor which is both refreshing and unique.
Both the S1 and S2 will run Android 3.0 with WiFi and 3G/4G compatibility. Availability is expected to be sometime in September.
This is something we’re definitely looking forward to. Head over to after the jump for a promo video, picture galley and the official press release from Sony.
