Samsung Galaxy S III stylus and accessories revealed

Posted:  May 14, 2012   By: soyacincau   No comments

While Samsung is getting ready to roll out its Galaxy S III flagship phone, more accessories have begin to surfaced. Apart from the usual docks, cables and covers, a UK mobile site has revealed some interesting add-ons.

The first one is the C-Pen which is a stylus pen that’s designed for the Galaxy S III. It sure does look thicker than an average stylus and is designed to help in making more accurate input or drawing. The C-Pen is different from the Galaxy Note‘s S-Pen as it is a standalone pen with no silo to keep it away and there’s no additional buttons to toggle different functions.

Next is the WiFi Display hub which lets you stream content without cables to your HDTV. The device connects to a TV via standard HDMI and powered by micro USB. This is pretty much similar to HTC’s Media Link HD which lets you push videos or mirror your device activity wirelessly with TVs that doesn’t come with DLNA. We are more curious to find out if it comes with additional features on top of what HTC has to offer.

The rest of the accessories include a stand alone dock, a dock with secondary battery charger and its official flip covers that come in dark gray and ceramic white. Hit the source link for more.

DiGi Takes Down Galaxy S III ROI Page, Says it “Wasn’t Supposed to Be Public”

Posted:  May 12, 2012   By: ccsoya   3 comments

The DiGi Samsung Galaxy S III registration of interested page has been brought down just hours after it was discovered. A DiGi rep tells us via Twitter that the site “wasn’t supposed to be public” but didn’t explain why the site was put up in the first place.

Considering that the Galaxy S III is an eagerly anticipated device by a considerable number of gadget junkies here in Malaysia, it is reasonable to assume that a fair number of people have registered their interest on the page. Now that the site is down, we’re pretty sure most will ask what happens to to their registrations? Are the registrations still valid? We’ve presented this question to DiGi and will post an update when we get a response.

In any case, we don’t think the site will be down for long and it should be back up in a few days, probably sometime next week. What’s interesting is that with DiGi’s online store it’s a safe bet that those who registered with DiGi have a high likelihood of getting the Galaxy S III probably a little earlier than the rest — in the morning of the device launch day perhaps.

Also we expect Celcom, Maxis and event U Mobile to start making their Galaxy S III launch plans known to the public in the coming weeks as well so stay tuned.

Samsung Galaxy S III gesture features demonstrated

Posted:  May 12, 2012   By: soyacincau   8 comments

The Galaxy S III comes with a host of new features such as Smart Stay, Pop-up Play and S Voice. In the previous Galaxy S II, we have seen gesture features including the ability to zoom in/out by moving the device closer or away from you with 2 thumbs on the screen.

For the Galaxy S III, XDA Developers had discovered a couple of interesting new gesture features as well. The first one is the ability to screen capture by swiping your hand from left to right on top of the display. Next is the ability to go back to the top of the page by simply double tapping at the top of the device which is perfect for apps with long list or scrolling like Twitter timeline. The last trick which they have demonstrated is pausing the video by covering the device with your palm.

Watch it in action in the video above from 5:30 minute onwards.

BREAKING: DiGi starts ROI for Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted:  May 12, 2012   By: soyacincau   3 comments

Samsung Galaxy S III DiGi

UPDATE: The Galaxy S III ROI Page has been taken down.

The Samsung Galaxy S III is coming very soon in Malaysia and DiGi has already started its registration of interest for the upcoming 4.8″ quad core smart phone.

At time of posting, the page is not found on the home page of DiGi but with the ROI page being live, this is an indication that the telcos are getting ready to launch it very soon. The Galaxy S III will be available on 29th of May in Europe with Malaysian release to follow closely after. Samsung’s regional Mobile head had indicated early June for Malaysian release, but from the looks of it, we might be getting it much sooner. The Galaxy S III is already showing in Samsung Malaysia page here.

To register your interest, head over to DiGi’s Galaxy S III page.

Big thanks to @weisheatan for the alert!

Samsung uses HD Super AMOLED on Galaxy S III for longer lifespan

Posted:  May 12, 2012   By: soyacincau   6 comments

When the Samsung Galaxy S III was announced, it came with a HD Super AMOLED PenTile display rather than its top of the line non-PenTile Super AMOLED Plus. Naturally there are those that criticise the choice of “downgrading” the display from its Samsung Galaxy S II. According to the a Samsung rep that Mobile Burn had spoke to, the decision was purely based on durability and longevity of the display.

Samsung has been a major user of AMOLED screens since its first Samsung Galaxy S which wowed users with its vibrant colours and saturated display. Although AMOLED looks great, there are some issues reported in terms of reliability with screens starting to deteriorate over time. According to Samsung the blue subpixels tend to wear out the fastest which is why they opt for the PenTile maxtrix to overcome such issue.

As seen on the microscopic image above from engadget, a PenTile display uses an arrangement of RGBG (Red Green Blue Green). This means there are more green subpixels compared to its red & blue subpixels. As a result, images doesn’t seem to appear as sharp with some users complaining odd distortion of high resolution icons on the screen. Is having a PenTile screen a big issue? With screens above 300ppi, the pixels would be too small for one to notice unless for those that nitpick down to ultra fine details.

The detail flaws of PenTile display is said to be noticable for screens with lower pixel density like a 4.3″ WVGA (800×480) of 217ppi or 7.7″ WXGA (1280×800) of 197ppi. This is where Super AMOLED Plus makes more sense to maintain image quality for the Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7.

So does this mean Samsung inadvertently admitted that its Super AMOLED Plus is flawed in terms of reliability? Developing another display technology would be expensive and might just bring marginal performance increase.

Samsung Galaxy S III benchmarked with impressive results

Posted:  May 7, 2012   By: soyacincau   18 comments

Samsung Galaxy S III Benchmark Results

The Samsung Galaxy S III runs on its very own Exynos 4 Quad that’s clocked at 1.4GHz. Its biggest rival is none other than Nvidia’s Tegra 3 with its 4-Plus-1 1.5GHz quad core processor that’s running on the HTC One X.

The folks at GSMArena has managed to get some performance figures on the new Galaxy S III and the results are pretty impressive. On Quadrant test, the S III scores 5642 points, blasting the HTC One S/X by almost 600-800 points margin. In the javascript based Sun-Spider, the S III again excels by almost 15% margin against the rest. Last but not least, it also score almost 50% more than the competition in BrowserMark test. You can check out the full benchmark comparison here.

With such figures, the Galaxy S III seems to be unstoppable but there’s a surprise from a unexpected device, the Meizu MX quad-core which runs on the same Exynos 4 Quad processor. On AnTuTu benchmark as seen above, the MX quad-core manages to outdo the Galaxy S III by a small margin with better gains in the CPU and RAM department. Some are saying the higher results was due to the Meizu’s processor clocked at a higher 1.5GHz which is more than the S III’s 1.4GHz. At a lower clock speed, the S III would likely to have to a longer battery life.
