Samsung to reevaluate Android 4.0 ICS update for Galaxy S & Galaxy Tab

Posted:  December 27, 2011   By: soyacincau   7 comments

Owners of the original Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab weren’t too happy with Samsung’s recent decision of not offering Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its early devices.

After getting lots of flak for abandoning its previous star models, Samsung seems to be making a U-turn on its decision and is reconsidering them for its OS upgrade exercise. We all know that it is not impossible for the Galaxy S since its similar Nexus S model is able to run Ice Cream Sandwich perfectly.

On the memory limitation, perhaps Samsung would need to scale back on some of its TouchWiz custom skin in order to maintain a fluid user experience. As usual, no datelines were given but probably will come after the first wave of ICS update which is happening in Q1 2012.

Celcom offers Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus with Broadband Plan + Pay Per Use Voice

Posted:  December 26, 2011   By: soyacincau   1 comment

Looks like Celcom has added another plan offering for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Apart from the usual Celcom Exec 50 + bolt on data, they have now introduced a new Broadband Basic + Pay Per Use plan which costs RM68/month. This is similar to what DG Smart Plan is offering with data being bundled first and voice/sms usage are being charged as additional usage, making it perfect for those that rarely make calls.

On this new Broadband Basic, you’ll get a generous serving of 4GB data while calls are charged at 15sen/min and SMS at 10sen each. In terms of contract price, it is higher than the previous plans at RM1388 for 12 months and RM1328 for 24 months. For just mere RM60 difference, you might as well go for the shorter 12 months period instead. The upfront payment for this Broadband Basic + Pay Per Use plan is RM150 which will be rebated back over 10 months period.

For more information, head over to Celcom’s website.

Samsung Galaxy S & Galaxy Tab not getting Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted:  December 23, 2011   By: soyacincau   1 comment

It is official that the original Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab will not be getting some Ice Cream Sandwich loving. A few days ago, they have announced that the latest Android update will be coming to recent models including the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note, Tab 7.0 Plus, Tab 8.9 & Tab 10.1.

So what’s the reason for leaving Galaxy S & the original 7″ Galaxy Tab out? Samsung explains that the combination of TouchWiz skin, video calling features, widgets and localisation as a hindrance for a possible update. Another reasoning is the lack of available memory capacity. To blame it on hardware is very unlikely as its similar spec’ed Nexus S has started receiving the Android software upgrade as we speak. Of course this isn’t the end of the road as the adventurous ones should be able to get their Ice Cream Sandwich update through custom ROMs.

Now this makes the Galaxy Nexus even more tempting to get when it is released in Malaysia next month. Being a “pure google” device, you can be confident that it will be next in line to get the latest OS updates.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 11.6 with 2GHz Exynos 5250 CPU?

Posted:  December 10, 2011   By: soyacincau   3 comments

Just when you think Samsung has enough of tabs to go around, the Korean maker doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. BGR was tipped that Samsung is expected to launch a 11.6″ tablet which will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in February 2012. The upcoming tablet is said to be powered by the recently announced Exynos 5250 CPU clocked at 2GHz and runs on the latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

It was also mentioned that the 11.6″ screen is pushing a massive 2560×1600 resolution. That’s double of the usual 1280×800 resolution on today’s tablet devices. Despite having a larger screen, the dimensions are barely larger than a normal 10.1″ due to its thinner bezel design. All these are obviously unconfirmed but it is interesting to see what would Samsung pull off for the next range of Ice Cream Sandwich flavoured tablets.

Sample Pictures and Video: Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

Posted:  December 3, 2011   By: ccsoya   9 comments

We’ve compiled some samples pictures and a video taken using the camera on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. With “only” 3.2MP, it’s easy to assume that the Galaxy Tab 7.0 will find it hard to compete with the impressive 8MP phones like the Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note and the iPhone 4S but take a look at the collection of images after the jump, you’ll be impressed as to how well the camera on the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus performs.

Details are pin sharp, colour reproduction is accurate and contrast management is good as well. Overall, we’re mightily impressed at the pictures and video the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is capable of producing.

All Samsung Galaxy Tabs have 3.2MP cameras (with the exception of the Galaxy Tab 10.1v which has an 8MP sensor. The device is not available here) and we’re not sure if Samsung has done anything to the one on the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus but from our real life tests, it looks like the 7-incher has the best sub-8MP camera in the market today. If fact, aside from the loss in detail due to the small MP count, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus can hold its own even when pitted against the Samsung Galaxy Note — one of the best smartphone cameras in the market right now.

Take a look at the pictures and video after the jump and tell us what you think.

Suddenly the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is getting on the bundling bandwagon in Malaysia. Now Celcom is also offering the Galaxy Tab 8.9 3G version from as low as RM1,288.

There are 2 plans on offer, Celcom Broadband Basic with 4GB/month and Celcom Broadband Advanced with 6GB/month which can be subscribed with either 12 or 24 months commitment. For the cheapest bundle price of RM1,288 is tied with 24 months contract of Broadband Advanced at RM98/month.

From what we understand, both Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 for this region are running on dual-core 1.0GHz processor. It is either Celcom is offering the US 4G LTE version with 1.5GHz processor or it is another product mistake by Celcom like their Droid RAZR. If you are looking for the WiFi version, it is offered at RM1,679 with Yes Huddle 4G MiFi and credits.
