Step by Step Guide to Get the Official Ice Cream Sandwich Update for Your Galaxy Note

Posted:  May 23, 2012   By: ccsoya   31 comments

Great news to Galaxy Note users in Malaysia, the much awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update is available. We’ve been testing it on our loaner Galaxy Note and we can say that update brings all the great features from Ice Cream Sandwich integrated almost seamlessly with Samsung’s TouchWiz interface.

At first use, the update goes almost unnoticed but as you dig deeper into the settings and the other features like multi-tasking and camera, the enhancements become more and more noticeable. We’ve gotten reports from some user saying that they’ve experience higher battery drain. We can say that during our testing, we didn’t experience any such issues. The Galaxy Note with Ice Cream Sandwich feels much improved over the Gingerbread version.

A number of you have also asked for a guide on how to get the Ice Cream Sandwich for the Galaxy Note. We’ll try to produce a video for this but in the meantime, here’s a step-by-step guide. First of all, you need to know that the update is not available over the air (OTA). So unlike other devices, you will not be able to download the update directly onto your device via WiFi or 3G.

What you will need to do is install Kies – a software the allows you to manage the contents of your device using a computer – and update the Galaxy Note using the software. Samsung Kies (version 2.0) is available for download here.

Ok here’s what you need to do to update your Galaxy Note to Ice Cream Sandwich:

  1. Download and Install Samsung Kies on your computer. Do not connect your device while you’re installing Kies. Connect your device only after you have installed the software.
  2. After you have installed Kies, connect your device to your PC and activate the Kies application
  3. If this is your first time connecting your Galaxy Note to your PC, let the PC install all the necessary drivers
  4. Once all the drivers for your device has been installed, Kies should connect to your automatically
  5. Once your device is connected to Kies, the software should prompt you that there is an update available and will as to begin the update
  6. Click “Update” to begin the process. After that just follow the instructions on your screen and do not disconnect the Galaxy Note until update is complete. Kies will tell you when it’s safe to do so

Hope the information has been useful for you. Here’s a link to an illustrated guide on the steps described above. Also, here’s a video of what you can expect to get from the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy Note.

Good luck and enjoy your Galaxy Note now with Ice Cream Sandwich.

By the numbers: Samsung Galaxy S III specs compared

Posted:  May 4, 2012   By: soyacincau   9 comments

The anticipated Samsung Galaxy S III is finally revealed in the early hours this morning. So how does the new Galaxy S III compares in term of hardware specification?

Side by side with the HTC One X, both comes with quad core processor which HTC sources from Nvidia while Samsung goes with its very own Exynos processor. In terms of screen, the Galaxy S III is bigger by 0.1″ but uses a PenTile HD Super AMOLED rather than its leading Super AMOLED Plus.

The biggest distinction between the two would be the battery which is removable on the Galaxy S III and expandable storage via microSD. Since cloud storage is an upcoming trend, Samsung also offers 50GB dropbox storage for 2 years, doubling what HTC is offering for the One X.

In the imaging section, the Galaxy S III carries a 8MP camera but with a gap closing burst mode of 20 continuous shots at 3.3FPS. As comparison, the HTC One X is capable of shooting up to 99 shots at 4FPS. Of course, speeds and quality are 2 different things and we are looking forward to see sample shots from the S III.

In terms of dimensions, the Galaxy S III is thicker and slightly heavier than the outgoing Galaxy S II. When compared to the HTC One X, the S III is thinner and has a smaller width and negligibly heavier by just 3 grams.

This time around, Samsung isn’t banging much on hardware and they have placed more emphasis on the software side of things. Along with Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, Samsung has integrated its own TouchWiz UI with more natural interaction such as S Voice, Smart Stay, Automatic Social Tagging and S Beam. Will these human interactions make a difference or is it just another party trick that would easily wear off? We will find out more once we get a hands on with the device which we believe is coming soon in the next month or so.

Find out more on the Galaxy S III features here.

Samsung Galaxy Note pricing now slashed to RM1,999

Posted:  April 23, 2012   By: soyacincau   8 comments

The 5.3″ Samsung Galaxy Note is now more affordable with its pricing now slashed from RM2,299 to RM1,999. This is a rather hefty RM300 reduction and could be an indication that its next Galaxy S III flagship device would be coming very soon.

In terms of telco offering, Maxis, DiGi, & Celcom has revised its bundled pricing respectively. If you’ve been eyeing for a extra large device that’s perfect for scribbling or watching movies on the go, now probably is a good time to get one.

Samsung Shows “Premium Suite” That’s Coming with ICS on the Galaxy Note

Posted:  March 23, 2012   By: ccsoya   10 comments

Update: Samsung made the earlier video private on YouTube and replaced it with another video featuring more detailed information about the “Premium Suite” update that will be coming to the Galaxy Note. No information of update release date is available at the moment.

Samsung has delayed the ICS update for the Galaxy Note to Q2 saying that it will also incorporate a “Premium Suite” together with Google’s latest mobile OS.

The “Premium Suite” will bring more features and enhancements to the S Pen user interface on the Galaxy Note to give user more functions and flexibility when using the stylus. What exactly are these enhancements? Check out the video from Samsung to find out more.

It looks like the features are more than ready for a public release, why the hold-up Samsung? Release the update already.

Samsung Galaxy Note ICS update delayed to Q2

Posted:  March 17, 2012   By: soyacincau   6 comments

Samsung Galaxy Note users hoping to get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich might need to wait a little longer. According to Samsung Norway’s facebook page, the ICS upgrade for Galaxy Note will be released in Q2 this year. A few days ago, Samsung has announced its roll out of ICS in stages for the Galaxy S II.

For other models, Samsung has already listed Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Tab 10.1 as additional models to get ICS but without providing any roll out timeline. Also yet to be known is the ICS upgrade for the recent Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and Tab 7.7. Since they are rather similar to the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 2 10.1, it shouldn’t be too hard for them to push ICS over onto existing models.

Let’s hope it won’t get delayed any further.
