U Mobile Prepaid gives daily free calls and cheaper Singapore roaming charges

Posted:  July 20, 2011   By: soyacincau   16 comments

Update: It looks like U Mobile has removed all the related information on its Singapore rates posted here. We have no idea why it has been removed.. U Mobile’s lowered Singapore Roaming rates promo is live again on their website.

U Mobile has revised its prepaid call plans which gives you free calls within U Mobile network. The free calls are based on the top up amount made as U Mobile gives you 1 day unlimited free calls for every RM1 top up. This means a RM30 top up will give you 30 days of free calls made from U Mobile to U Mobile.

Update: Reader @RozAriffin has highlighted in the comments that the Free calls is actually limited to 60 minutes a day. This is written in their T&C.

Once you’ve topped up, U Mobile will send a confirmation SMS on the free calls status or alternatively you can check by dialling *118#. The free calls period is calculated on a daily basis from 00:00AM to 11:59PM. The maximum accumulative days of free calls is 150 days as mentioned in their FAQ.

DiGi Prepaid Super 10 with 10sen/min call rate

Posted:  July 15, 2011   By: soyacincau   8 comments

DiGi has introduced Super 10, a subscription based promo which lets you call any local and mobile number for just 10 sen/minute. To enjoy this rate, it costs 99 sen a day with auto renewal subscription. To activate, dial *128*1*3# on your mobile.

As comparison, DiGi Best Prepaid normally charges 36 sen/min for calls and it is reduced to 12 sen/min after you hit RM1 usage. In terms of block charges, the normal rate of 36 sen/min is charged at 30 seconds, while the reduced 10/12 sen rates are charged at 60 seconds block.

Is this a good deal? Super 10 requires 99 sen per day which is like subscription/access fee. If subscribed for a month, that’s RM29.70 for subscription fees alone, without actual call credit. It all depends whether it is worth spending 99 sen for subscription just to save additional 2 sen/min when compared to hit RM1 usage rate of 12 sen/min. In this time and age, we don’t believe in paying for access fees and such high spenders would be better off with a postpaid plan.

For more information, head to DiGi Best Prepaid Super 10 page.

Yes Statement of Accounts details now fully viewable

Posted:  January 28, 2011   By: ccsoya   2 comments

A week after we discovered the appearance of this “Statement of Accounts” section in the Yes self-care portal, we’ve found out that you can now check the details of your usage with the Yes ebill. This ebill is available within the self-care section of the Yes portal and is available for down in PDF.

In contrast to the previous statements, the ebill shows the full breakdown of charges including data usage, SMS sent and calls made along with rebates earned and top ups made.

The itemised ebill also show where you usage is deducted from. Whether it is from your credit about or your rebate amount. This is tremendously useful as it gives a clear understanding of how the rebates are earned and it keeps track of exactly how much you use from which amount.

The weird part about the ebill is that under the service tax section, only the SMS and phone call usage amount was taxed but data usage wasn’t taxed.

There is a note at the bottom of the ebill that states that government tax only apply to calls and SMS made to other operators using your top up credit. However, calls and SMS within the Yes network are not taxable. In addition, calls and SMS made using rebate credit are not taxable too.

This is a pretty good deal, considering that rebate amounts are almost as good as cash encouraging Yes users to earn as much rebates as possible.

Check out out Yes ebill right after the jump for your reference.

Yes adds Statement of Account into Self Care

Posted:  January 20, 2011   By: soyacincau   1 comment

About a week ago, Yes had started offering its customers some usage info on Self Care which displays how much data, calls and SMS you’ve made so far. Now they’ve added a new feature called Statement of Account which should rightfully show you itemised details of your usage. Unfortunately at time of posting, it doesn’t show anything for our account. Most probably we might need to wait for our billing cycle in order for the statement to be generated.

At least now the question of how much we’ve used and what we used it for is more or less addressed. However there are other questions unanswered such as:

  • When is my billing cycle?
  • When exactly during my usage do I earn rebates?
  • When exactly do I need to use up a minimum RM30 per month?

Hopefully these questions are answered after we get our first statement.

Yes you can now track your usage

Posted:  January 11, 2011   By: ccsoya   3 comments

Up until yesterday Yes 4G subscribers had no way to track their usage of the service through the Yes self-care portal.

Turns out now you can. Yes has updated their self-care portal to introduce usage tracking and you get a basic overview of what you’ve used your Yes credits for, be it data, SMS or voice calls.

It’s a good start, though we’re perplexed as to why this wasn’t available from the beginning and we suspect it could be related to the back-end system issues that was bugging the telco in its first few weeks after the brand was launch.

What we would like to see is Yes add more detail into the tracking just like you would typically get from a mobile operator such as how much data was downloaded and uploaded, details of individual calls as in to what number the call was made to, the date, time and also the duration of the call. Same goes with SMS where subscribers know when they send and to who the SMS was sent to.

There’s no doubt that Yes will eventually have all these feature online, the question is when?

Tune Talk Points for Free AirAsia flights

Posted:  October 5, 2010   By: soyacincau   4 comments

Tune Talk has finally revealed its Tune Talk points which can be used to redeem free flights on AirAsia. Its chief talker Jason Lo had given a heads up yesterday via twitter.

So how do you earn these Tune Talk points? This is done simply by topping up and you’ll earn points based on the amount you use. The higher amount you top up, the more points you get per RM spent as per table below.

As you can see, the topping up RM50 and above gives you more points for the buck at 2.4x. So to speed up your points collection, RM50 is a good sweet spot for topping up. You can check your balance by dialling *133# on your tune talk line.

As far as redemption is concerned, it is not too hard and it is not too easy either. However it is easier to achieved compared to other forms of free flight redemption programs that we know of. The cheapest redemption starts at 2000 points for flights from KL to anywhere in Peninsular Malaysia or from Penang to Kuching Sarawak. Assuming if you top up RM50 consistently on a monthly basis, 2000 points is yours within 17 months which is equivalent to RM850 top ups made. We’re pretty sure that Tune Talk will come out with time limited promotion that turbo boost your points collection in the near future. So keep an eye on TuneTalk for upcoming promotions. You can view their full point redemption table here.

The points collection starts today on 5th October onwards and once you get enough points, you can redeem your flights by calling 13100. The beauty of this is that the points won’t expire. Another thing to note is that all flight redemption must be done 30 days ahead of your desired departure date and no change is allowed after that. The points are non-transferable between Tune Talk numbers and credit transfers do not count as well.

For more details, head to Tune Talk site and read up their FAQ.

We’ve gotta say this, Tune Talk’s website looks kinda childish and the design is out of place for a telco. Perhaps a revamp to standardise your pages?

U Mobile revamps U Prepaid plan

Posted:  September 23, 2010   By: soyacincau   3 comments

In the midst of the iPhone 4 fever in Malaysia, U Mobile decides to be the thorn among the roses. They have announced a revamp on its U Prepaid plan which now offers longer validity and reduced voice call rates.

Now the starter pack of RM8 comes with RM5 preloaded time time and 30 days validity. Nationwide call rates have been reduced to 18 sen/minute at 30 seconds block. Of course, this doesn’t beat Tunetalk’s 16 sen/minute rates. However for RM10 top up, you’ll get 30 days validity which is 3x more than others.

For more details, head up to U Mobile’s prepaid page.

Hotlink introduces new bi weekly mobile internet packages

Posted:  August 12, 2010   By: ccsoya   2 comments

UPDATE: Hotlink revises plans again. Drops 250MB option and introduces 5MB weekly package. Read about it here.

Hotlink has introduced a bi weekly rates for its mobile internet package in addition to its hourly, daily and monthly mobile internet packages.

The new bi weekly packages offer a 100MB data usage plan for RM18 and a 250MB data usage for RM38. It offers good options for the prepaid user but managing your data use the MB is a bit of a hassle in our opinion. If we had to choose, we’d take a monthly option any day. But having said that, if you’re using your mobile exclusively for IM and tweeting then, the bi weekly plans are worth a look.

OLD: Previous Hotlink mobile internet plans

Also, Hotlink will be revising their pay-per-use data rates to reflect industry standard rates of 10KB per block (RM0.10/10KB from 7am – 2am & RM0.05/10KB from 2am – 7am). The average price per KB remains the same. The new pay-per-use rates will take affect from 16 August onwards.
