Browsing full websites on mobile devices can be a pain and that’s where Opera reigns supreme as a mobile web browser. Available across multiple platforms including entry level java supported devices, Opera does a nifty job in rendering full websites for small screen and compressing them small enough for speedy and cheaper usage.
This week they have released new versions of the browsers, Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11 that comes with several new features. The first noticeable difference is opening new tabs is done in the background without interrupting the page you’re viewing. Of course, this is subject to one’s preferences.
Scrolling through pages is noticably smoother than the previous version. Another neat trick is if you wanted to scroll all the way to the top or the bottom, just make a big swipe towards the direction you want and hit the big arrow button when it appears. The new release also comes with a prominent Share button which in the Android version shares the URL across your sharable apps like Facebook, Twitter, Email, SMS and etc.
For those who still doesn’t know the difference between Mini and Mobile, Opera Mini is a compact browser which renders web pages on Opera’s compression servers before loading up on your phone. This is perfect for prepaid users that are cost conscious as web pages are compressed small enough for small screen viewing. Opera Mobile however is a full fledged browser which renders on your device, but if you need compression it is also readily available by enabling Opera Turbo under settings.
To download, visit m.opera.com on your default mobile browser. Full details of Opera Mini/Mobile here.
If you’re a DiGi customer, they are doing a special promo for Opera Mini where downloads at m.opera.com is free of charge. You’ll also stand a chance to grab 1MB free Data for prepaid customers and win a HTC Mozart for sharing. More details on the DiGi Opera Mini offer here.

Just as announced earlier on, Opera Mobile is now available for Android. You can find it at the Market, just search for “Opera Mobile”.
First you’ll notice that the Opera Mobile installation file is 6.4MB, which is substantially bigger than its Mini’s 800KB. Running Opera Mobile for the first time doesn’t feel much different from its Mini counterpart. However when you start browsing, that’s where you feel the difference of its full rending engine.
Pages load immediately as they come and you can now pinch to zoom instead of the previous stepped zoom in/out views. We noticed that while pinch to zoom, the text does take a while to rerender itself as if the text was a progressive JPG image which is pretty weird. For those who regularly surf on slower connection, you can always hit the Opera Turbo feature in Settings for server side compression of web pages.
Still confused with the difference between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile? Opera has a better explaination here.

Earlier on Opera had announced on its blog that an Android version for its Opera Mobile would be coming soon. Now it has been announced that 9th November will be the release date. Not to be confused with Opera Mini, Opera Mobile offers true web browsing experience without the need of external compression technology. We’ll see how does it fare against the likes of preloaded WebKit browser and FireFox 4 for Mobile.
In conjunction of this release, Opera is organising a Android wallpaper contest where they are giving out a brand new Samsung Galaxy S as the prize.

Opera has announced on its blog that Opera Mobile is coming to Android within a month. Among the new features is having hardware acceleration for speedy response and pinch to zoom.
If you’ve been using Opera on your android device, that is actually Opera Mini which is different from Opera Mobile. Opera Mini is a lightweight browser that relies on external servers to compress and deliver web content to your phone. This makes it appealing for lightweight mobile device and slow connections like GPRS or EDGE. In other words, the actual web engine is done off site and not on your phone. This compromises on usability as what you see is an post-compressed product of the real web.
For more powerful smartphones and adequate 3G speeds, that’s where Opera Mobile comes in. It has a real web browser engine and takes full advantage of the power on your phone.
Based on our past experience with Opera, we’re confident that it would do a better job than FireFox Mobile. We can’t wait to try it out when it goes live on Android Market.

In a report published by Opera, the iPhone has become the third-most popular mobile phone to run Opera Mini barely over two weeks after it was launched in Apple’s App Store.
The report, called State of the Mobile Web Report, published monthly by Opera, provides information on the top global trends affecting mobile Web.
With the Opera Mini mobile browser being the world’s most downloaded free app in Apple’s App stores worldwide, its pretty obvious that iPhone users want or at least welcome the option to run an alternative browser on their device.
In fact, the Opera Mini is such a popular app on the iPhone that it is currently the #1 device used by Opera Mini users in the United States, well ahead of BlackBerry (which previously occupied the top spot).
Like it or not, there is now a mobile web browser alternative for the iPhone. While the jury is still out on whether the Opera Mini is actually better than iPhone’s native Mobile Safari, iPhone users are downloading it by the droves around the world – the new mobile browser is currently the top free app in all 22 App Stores!
What’s clear is the fact the iPhone user like to have a choice – a choice to choose a mobile browser of their liking.
Here’s hoping Apple will open up the App Store to alternative apps.

We thought that it would never happen but it has.
Opera has just made an official announcement today that the Opera Mini mobile web browser has been approved by Apple for the iPhone and iPod touch and it will be available for free in the App Store within the next 24 hours, depending on where you are.
Opera Mini will be the first alternative web browser for the iPhone and iPod. Currently there over 50 million people using the browser worldwide and we’re amongst them. Using the Opera Mini 5 in our traditional non-touchscreen phones, we have to say, it is a really good mobile web browser. So good in fact that we’re putting ourselves out on a limb in saying that the Opera Mini is even better than Apple’s Mobile Safari.
You know what’s funny? Opera has even setup a countup page to track how long it takes for Apple to approve the app – now that’s positive thinking!
Can’t wait to get our hands on the Opera Mini for iPhone!
