Maxis has finally revealed its Nokia N8 bundling on their site. It goes for as low as RM999 over 24 months data contract on top of existing Value Plan 50 plans and above. If 24 months is too long, there’s a 18 months and 12 months option that offers the device for RM1149 and RM1299 respectively. Maxis data plans starts from RM58/month for 500MB and up to RM88/month for 3GB quota.
Nokia N8 is the current top of the range Symbian^3 device you could get at the moment with a retail price of RM1699. Running the latest Symbian^3 OS, this would be the game changer for Nokia to face off the likes of iPhones, Androids and most recently Windows Phone 7 devices.

We couldn’t make it to both launches today but the word on the official pricing is out. The first part of the morning, Microsoft has launched Windows Phone 7 in Malaysia with the HTC HD7 and HTC 7 Mozart. The HTC HD7 that’s exclusive to Maxis is going for RRP RM2399 while the HTC 7 Mozart is going for a RM2099.

Next, the pricing of the anticipated Nokia N8 has been revealed too. As we roughly estimated earlier, the Nokia N8 goes for RRP RM1690 while the Nokia C7 was announced with RRP RM1490.
More details later as soon as we get it.

The Nokia N8 has been given ifixit‘s signature teardown treatment. Watch how these guys tear down this anticipated device down to its bare components while they guide you through each parts and components installed.
They will show you how easy it is to open up the device with a T4 Torx screw, revealing a 1200mAh Nokia BL-4D battery which Nokia says is not recommended for user replacement. They also discovered that the AMOLED display is independent and not fused together. This should mean cheaper and easy replacement if you accidentally break the N8′s glass.

Right now it is heavily debated on whether the Nokia N8 is superior compared to its iPhone 4 rival. You would have read accusations of biasness across the web by now. While the subject of image quality is being scrutinised, someone else had taken a different route by pushing the Nokia N8 12MP camera capabilities to the next level.
HX Custom ROMS had experimented with a Nokia N8 hack that pushes its default HD video recording from 25fps to 30fps. At the same time, they have also tweaked the JPG compression to save them to a massive 11MB per photo instead of the usual compressed 2MB per photo.

The raw photo they provided looks very detailed but we can’t really tell if it is an improvement since they didn’t provide a default non-hacked version. You can download the original 4000×3000 photo and video over at HX Custom ROMS here.

Yeap, you read that right, someone actually pitted the humble camera phone with a full-fledge DSLR.
At our the Nokia N8 sneak peak we attended, the Nokia techies said that the camera performance on the Nokia N8 is on par, if not better than some dedicated point and shoot cameras out there. So the question inevitably arise that what if the imaging prowess of the Nokia N8 was pitted against a DSLR.
Well, now you’ll be able to find out. How do you think the Nokia N8 would fare against an actual high-performance digital camera.

The Nokia N8 packs one of the most high-end optics ever seen on a camera. There’s a Carl Zeiss Tessar lens with five optical elements contained within in. Then there’s a mechanical shutter, unlike other camera phones where the sensor is switched on and off digitally, the Nokia N8 has a physical shutter that opens and closes like eyelids that’s more like an actual camera. You can see the shutter in action ins our N8 video here.
Everyone knows that the N8 has a 12MP image sensor, but not many realize that apart from the double digit pixel count, the sensor on the N8 is the biggest ever built into a mobile phone. An increase in pixel count means nothing if the image sensor is the same size, you get a high pixel density with smaller pixels, and you don’t want that. What you want in a good camera is a large image sensor so that you can have larger pixels to capture images, with larger pixels on the sensor, you get better pictures and the Nokia N8 gives that.
Compare this with the camera on the iPhone 4. Apart from the 5MP pixel count and a larger image sensor to accommodate larger pixels (just like the Nokia N8), not much detail is known about the camera, who manufacturers the lens, what size is the sensor etc. and it has a digital shutter as opposed to a physical one.
So based on these facts, which phone takes better pictures?
While we wait for the official launch of the Nokia N8 in Malaysia, we’ll bring you links to two very good reviews of both cameras side-by-side, one from Engadget and another, a re-review of Engadget’s review. It’s a very interesting read and is worth a look.

We had some hands-on time with the Nokia N8 earlier this month and was impressed with the improvements that Nokia has introduced in the Symbian OS, the overall quality of the device and it’s imaging performance.
The 12MP camera on the Nokia N8 produces some of the best images we’ve seen captured from a mobile phone. Though we’ll need more playtime with the Nokia N8 to draw a conclusion, there’s no denying that there’s some very high-end stuff used in the Nokia N8 camera.
Chief among this is the Carl Zeiss Tessar optics that consists of five single optical elements, all of which has aspherical surfaces. To give you a picture of how complex that is in terms of lenses for mobile phones, there are typically three to four elements in a good quality lens used in a DSLR with some of the more complicated ones containing over 15 elements.
To explain more about the lens used on the Nokia N8, head boffin at Carl Zeiss, Dr. Hubert Nasse goes on video and gives you a some details the stuff that’s packed into the lens of the Nokia N8.
Head on over to after the jump to check out the video. You’ll be interested to find out that the video was shot and edited fully on a Nokia N8.

Malaysians anticipating for Nokia N8 will have to wait a little bit longer. Previously it was targetted to launch sometime end of this month or early October, but now the dateline is indicated to be pushed towards end of October.
It was reported that the Nokia N8 enjoyed a strong pre-order demand, and this could be the most desired Nokia model to date. According to official statement, Nokia acknowledges the demand had exceeded its expectations. To ensure “great user-experience”, they decided to hold shipment for the device for a few weeks to make some final amendments. Looks like they are making last minute bug fix or refinements before it hits the market. Hope it is worth the wait.

You’ve already seen how the Nokia N8 works flawlessly on a LCD TV via HDMI, but what if you can touch the TV as well? Well, there’s an App for that, possibly.
Nokia Research Labs has been working on a prototype called Plug and Touch which extends its TV output capabilities to the next level. With your normal HDTV set up, it is possible to have “touch input” despite having no touch input capabilities.
This is made possible with the app’s hand gestures and “touch” recognition via the Nokia N8′s 12MP Camera. Although it is not a finished product but we admit, it is pretty good for a proof of concept. Imagine doing presentations or surf the web on your TV with this thing.
Check out the demo video after the jump.
