Last week, there was a news of an exploding Motorola Droid 2 which caught a lot of attention worldwide. It was reported that the owner had ended a phone call which resulted a loud pop and started bleeding from the ear. The interesting part was that the phone was still working fine while the “victim” had to receive 4 stitches on the ear.
Now there’s a new update where an internal Motorola staff had refute such explosive claims. It was said that the Droid 2 was very likely to be dropped and had its screen cracked. The owner didn’t notice the broken glass and proceed to press it against his ear which resulted the injury on his ear.
The Motorola staff also added that the only things that could explode on the Droid 2 would have resulted in a phone that won’t work at all but yet it still works. There was no sign of explosive damage inside where its internals get blown outwards. However they still couldn’t explain the loud “POP” which was reported by the owner. What do you think? Hardware deffect or sensationalised claims by owner?

UPDATE: Motorola staff refuted exploding phone claims. Read about it here.
Aron Embry had a nasty incident with his 2 day old Motorola Droid 2. While hanging up on a call, he suddenly heard a loud pop and felt something flowing down his face. It was then he realised that his Moto Droid 2 had burst part of the front screen and he started bleeding. Lucky for him, he suffered no hearing loss but had to receive four stitches on the ear. Meanwhile, the culprit device surprisingly still works and doesn’t seem to show any problems on the internal hardware.
We have heard about exploding phones especially when being used during charge. Most of these incidents were blamed on uncertified phones or unlicensed 3rd party batteries. However this certainly raised eyebrows as its a brand new device coming from a well to do maker like Motorola. Motorola is taking this seriously and had issued the following statement:
Motorola’s priority is, and always has been the safety of our customers, and all Motorola products are designed, manufactured and tested to meet or exceed international and local standards for consumer safety. We will reach out to the consumer and investigate this thoroughly.

Earlier on, we had a peek on a new Droid 2 dubbed the Droid 2 Global. While it looks almost the same as the original Droid 2, the Motorola Droid 2 Global spots a faster 1.2GHz processor and supports both CDMA and GSM. Also bundled in are more productivity tools and also remote data wipe functionality.
So far we haven’t seen any official announcement but Verizon Wireless had revealed the details piece by piece without much obvious attention. Now there’s even a video for it.
Check out the introductory video after the jump.
Droid-Life has an exclusive scoop on the Global version of the Motorola Droid 2 in a form of a comparison sheet.
From the details, the Droid 2 Global comes in 2 colours, Dark Sapphire and Winter White. The processor has been bumped up as well to 1.2GHz and the 3.7″ screen supports a wide 854×480 resolution. Being a global phone, the Droid 2 supports both CDMA and GSM signals. This poses a challenge to HTC’s Desire Z which also features a slider QWERTY keyboard.

Google mobile has added a new feature to Google Voice Search for Android and they call it Voice Actions for Android.
Voice Actions are a series of spoken commands that let you control your phone using your voice. Call businesses and contacts, send texts and email, listen to music, browse the web, and complete common tasks, all just by speaking into your phone.
It sounds pretty awesome and the demo video looks convincing but we’ve yet to try this new feature to the fullest. If it works like Google says it does, yeah, its going to be a major convenience for those quick text reply while you’re driving (again with the driving).
Voice Action for Android is now available in the Android Market but will require Android 2.2 (Froyo). It’s pre-installed with the new Motorola Droid 2, which unfortunately, is not available here.
For the other Froyo devices that are available here like the Nexus One, you’ll need the latest version of Voice Search and Google Search widget. For the Desire and Galaxy S owners out there, sorry, you’re out of luck at the moment.
Also, Voice Actions only currently recognises U.S. English speakers, and we don’t think some of the features are fully supported here just yet.

Verizon Wireless with its DroidDoes campaign is promoting the new Motorola Droid 2 with this sophisticated ad. Pretty high grade ad campaign which demostrates the new device slider QWERTY keyboard, 1GHz processor and corporate mail support.
Head on after the jump to watch the video

When the Motorola Droid 2 was announced, it was mentioned that there’s a Star Wars R2-D2 version as well.
R2D2Central has twitpic a photo of the device. From the photo, it features a white colour base with robotic decals which is disappointingly ugly. The Droid 2 with all that makes it look cheap and childish.
We’re expecting much more than just a slap on of stickers which probably fade or scratch off after a period of time. Hopefully this isn’t the final product but we’re not keeping our hopes too high on this one.

Motorola together with Verizon has finally announced the Droid 2, the successor to the popular Motorola Droid / Milestone. To ride on the success of its predecessor, the Droid 2 maintain its original form factor and features a new slider QWERTY keyboard, WiFi hotspot capability and Flash 10.1 support. All of these comes ready the Android 2.2 Froyo built-in.
According to early leaked specs, the Droid 2 has a 8GB Internal Memory with additional 8GB microSD, a 5.0MP Camera and 1GHz TI OMAP Processor with dedicated GPU.
The Droid 2 is offered at $199 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a 2 year contract. For those who wish to share their 3G connectivity as a WiFi hotspot will need to pay additional $20 a month.
According to the press release, Verizon Wireless is also offering a limited edition R2-D2 version of the Droid 2 which will Star Wars content and R2-D2 skinned body.
Pre-orders are expected to start tomorrow at the DroidDoes microsite.

The replacement for the popular Motorola Droid or Milestone is becoming less of a rumour now. Droid-Life has exclusive photos and videos of what appears to be the Motorola Droid 2.
It looks pretty much the same as the original Droid except for the obvious revamped keyboard layout. Perhaps Motorola doesn’t want to mess up something that people already like and the Droid 2 stay true to its original design which is a good thing in our opinion.
Specification details & boot video after the jump.

We might be seeing a sequel to Motorola Droid which is Verizon’s prime Android device. Being a possible Droid 2, the leak photos show a new keyboard layout without a D-Pad and a dedicated microphone/speak key.
No other information are known at this point.
