LG to start pushing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich updates from Q2 2012

Posted:  December 27, 2011   By: ccsoya   4 comments

LG has revealed that selected range of its Android smartphones is scheduled to start receiving the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) upgrade starting the second quarter of next year.

The phones that LG has identified to be able to receive the update are:
Optimus 2X
Optimus Sol — Release date in Malaysia unknown
Prada phone by LG 3.0 — Release date in Malaysia unknown
Optimus LTE — Not available in Malaysia
myTouch Q — Not available in Malaysia
Eclipse — Not available in Malaysia

The range if LG devices will be extended to the following starting from the third quarter of 2012.
Optimus 3D
Optimus Black
Optimus Big — Not available in Malaysia
Optimus Q2 — Not available in Malaysia
Optimus EX — Not available in Malaysia

Despite the timeline, LG says that exact update release dates will vary depending on market and operator. Considering there’s almost no operator customisation for smartphones in Malaysia, you can expect the updates to be available for local units shortly after it becomes globally available.

In comparison, Samsung has announced that a selected range of its Galaxy devices is scheduled to receive Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update within the first quarter of next year while Sony Ericsson has indicated ICS update roll out to start by March 2012.

Official statement from LG via its Facebook page right after the jump.

LG to release Android 4.0 ICS roll out roadmap

Posted:  November 28, 2011   By: soyacincau   2 comments

For those that are still doubting LG’s roll out of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, here’s the latest update. Today LG has posted on their LG Mobile Facebook page that they are rolling out ICS update to all LG Optimus phones released this year.

The models getting some Ice Cream Sandwich loving are:

  • LG Optimus 2X
  • LG Optimus Black
  • LG Optimus 3D
  • LG Optimus LTE

At the same time, they are evaluating if this update can be extended to other LG Optimus phones and they are trying to make it available to as many models as possible. So when is all this happening? LG has added that the roll out schedule and list of supported models will be made public next month on their facebook page.

Currently LG is rolling out Gingerbread update for LG Optimus 2X, Black and 3D beginning with users in Europe. Hopefully this marks a new trend for LG to stay up to date with its rivals in terms of Android OS versions.

LG rolling out Gingerbread update for Optimus 2X, 3D & Black

Posted:  November 1, 2011   By: soyacincau   5 comments

While the possibility of LG Optimus line getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is almost zero, here’s something to cheer about.

LG Mobile has announced via their Facebook page that their Optimus smart phone line will be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. They have named 3 receipients – LG Optimus 2X, LG Optimus 3D and LG Optimus Black. The update will be rolled out for open models starting in Europe beginning this month and this will be followed by a global roll out later on.

Malaysian users should expect the update soon and it is likely to happen before the year is out. So LG finally is on the Android Gingerbread bandwagon. It look them long enough but like the saying goes, it is better late than never.

Update: Celcom updates us on the revised pricing for the Xperia Play. RRP is now cheaper by RM250. Celcom Exec subsidised pricing is now cheaper too as a result. Details here.

Holy guacamole! Will you look at that. Out of nowhere, Celcom — the BlackBerry-centric operator — will be offering a line of the latest Android smartphones including the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play along with LG Optimus Black and the just released HTC Wildfire S. Could this be a sign of Celcom’s eagerness to get into the mobile device game? We sure hope so.

The Xperia Play retails for RM1,899 and will be available from Celcom for as low as RM968 when you subscribe to one of the operators Celcom Exec plans.

In terms of the Celcom Exec plans, it is the same deal as previously with RM88, RM118 and RM250 packages. Typical to Celcom, there will be an upfront fee imposed as well. the amount varies depending on the plan you choose and the duration of the subscription contract. Refer to the chart after the jump for details.

The information we got from regular tipster Rakyat Biru didn’t reveal the availability date for these devices, we’re assuming Celcom will make an announcement soon.

Big shoutout to Rakyat Biru for the awesome tip!

LG Optimus Black now available at RM1399

Posted:  May 27, 2011   By: soyacincau   No comments

The LG Optimus Black is finally here in Malaysia at an attractive price tag of RM1399 from IMCC Network. The Optimus Black which looks similar to the LG Optimus 2X but it is LG’s slimmest smart phone at 9.2mm.

As mentioned in our earlier post, the key highlight of the Optimus Black is its NOVA display which offers half the power consumption of standard LCDs but offers the highest brightness performance at 700 nits. As comparison, the iPhone 4 does 571 nits while the Samsung Galaxy S pushes 347 nits. Its dual core sibling the Optimus 2X does 399 nits. On paper, this should give superior viewing outdoors.

Internally, it has a 1GHz TI OMAP 3630 processor, 512MB of RAM and a decent 2GB of internal storage which is expandable via microSD. Another neat feature on the Optimus Black is a gesture UI which lets you perform regular task by simple hand gestures such as making calls or enabling the music player. All these for RM1399 is quite a steal considering its unique screen, decent specs and slim form factor.

More details of the specs at LG’s site here.

LG confirms Optimus Black to hit Malaysian stores in May

Posted:  April 11, 2011   By: ccsoya   3 comments

LG Malaysia is seriously under-selling its products. It could be a result of our own ignorance but we strongly feel that there’s so much to talk about with regards to the current crop of LG smart phones coming to Malaysia within these two months, and yet we see very little of LG in the news or social media.

First of all is the LG Optimus 2X — the world’s fist dual-core Android smart phone. It’s available now in Malaysia, and there’s nary a news report about it in the mainstream media. We’re talking about the latest Android device with cutting edge dual-core performance at a ridiculously low price and it’s available here in Malaysia right now! There’s so much to talk about the Optimus 2X and yet no one is talking about the device. Its a tremendous opportunity missed in our opinion.

Next, we have the LG Optimus Black. LG Malaysia confirms that the device is heading to Malaysia this May.

The Optimus Black boasts LG’s proprietary NOVA display technology that LG claims to be the “brightest, clearest and most readable” mobile display in the market. The Optimus Black’s NOVA display pushes out a whopping 700 nits of display brightness. In comparison, the iPhone 4′s Retina Display pushes 571 nits, the Nexus S (Super AMOLED) pushes 371 nits, Samsung Galaxy S (Super AMOLED) 347 nits. The Optimus Black’s stablemate, the Optimus 2X pushes 399 nits via its standard LCD screen with IPS.

The 700 nits brightness performance of the NOVA display would mean that outdoor viewing under bright sunlight is not going to be a problem for the Optimus Black and we’re pretty interested to see how the display will perform outdoors but we’d also like to point out that brightness is just one part of the display equation. Contrast, sharpness, black performance, colour reproduction and viewing angles must all be taken into account when assessing a display.

Another advantage of LG’s NOVA display is its lower power consumption by up to 50% less when compared to standard LCDs. LG also says that when displaying a full white screen, non-backlit AMOLED screens uses twice as much power as the NOVA display.

Other than that the Optimus Black features a 4.0-inch 480×800 screen. It runs on a 1Ghz processor (TI OMAP 3630) with 512MB RAM and 2GB internal storage expandable to 32GB with a microSD card. OS wise the Optimus Black is running Android 2.2 with Optimus UI 2.0 skin that also comes with Gesture UI which is an interface that allows you to use gestures such as lifting and shaking the device to execute commands like answering a call or playing music.

Imaging comes in the form of a 5MP rear camera with 720p 30fps video recording and a 2MP front camera. For connectivity, the Optimus Black supports DLNA media sharing as well as WiFi hotspot features. Dimensions wise, LG claims the Optimus Black is the world’s thinnest smart phone being just 6.0mm thin at it’s thinnest point and 9.2mm thin at its thickest point. In comparison, the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is 8.7mm thin at its thinnest point while the iPad 2 is 8.8mm thin.

Although LG Malaysia has confirmed that the Optimus Black will be coming in May, it didn’t mention specifically what date and how much.

Head on over to after the jump for a full press release from LG Malaysia and a promo video of the Optimus Black.
