Conan has done it again with a parody of the new iPad mini commercial. The original commercial is a nice piano duet that features a full sized iPad and its new mini sibling playing side by side. In the parody, Conan pokes fun at Apple fans that are obsessed with buying the latest models.
Even if the new iPad (3rd Gen) has been replaced so quickly by the 4th gen version, that doesn’t mean your existing iPad becomes trash. The 3rd gen iPad is still a stunning device with its Retina display and it is now cheaper by RM120. The newest 9.7″ iPad offers a bump in performance, improved front camera while maintaining the same dimensions and design.

UPDATE: New iPad 4th Gen and iPad Mini comparison table updated. Added Galaxy Tab 7.7.
After the unveiling of the new iPad mini and 4th generation iPad, it is time for another round of comparison. We have compared the tablets with both the internal hardware as well as the exterior dimensions.
The new iPad mini comes with a slightly larger 7.9″ display that does 1024×768 resolution, which is the same resolution of its older iPad 2 of 9.7″. While that gives a higher pixel density of 163ppi (pixels per inch), it is behind the Nexus 7 of 216ppi due to its higher resolution of 1280×800. In terms of dimensions, the iPad mini is the thinnest and lightest of the lot at only 7.2mm thick and 308g heavy.
Moving on to the larger tablets, the new iPad in its 4th generation still holds the highest pixel density of 264ppi thanks to its higher than HD resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. As comparison, the closest rival in the form of ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity does a lower full HD resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. In terms of battery, the 9.7″ iPad is still the largest with a rated 10 hour battery life and as a result, it is also the heaviest in this comparison.
Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is a more unique offering with a included S-Pen stylus, 2GB of RAM and higher camera resolution of 8MP for the rear and 2MP at the front. In terms of 3G SIM sizes, the Android tablets are using the regular Mini-SIM while Apple is the only contender that uses micro-SIM. For the new iPad mini, it uses the latest nano-SIM, similar to the iPhone 5.

Apple has revealed its latest line up of MacBook Pro, iMacs and iPads at their special event in San Jose. The biggest highlight that most are anticipating is the new iPad mini, which is Apple’s foray into the sub-10″ tablet category.
New 4th generation iPad with Retina Display
Before that, lets talk about the new 4th generation iPad which replaces the current new iPad with Retina Display. The new 9.7″ iPad is now simply called the iPad with Retina display, which is similar naming convention with their MacBook Pro line up. While it was expected as a minor refresh to include a lightning connector and wider LTE support, the 4th gen iPad comes with an all new dual-core A6X chip with quad-core graphics. This promises twice the performance over the iPad it replaces.
Despite having a more powerful chip, the 4th gen iPad still maintains its 10 hour battery life. The front facing camera has also been upgraded to 1.2MP to support FaceTime in HD. The rest of the hardware remains unchanged including the same 9.4mm thickness and 652 gram weight for WiFi model. Along with the new lightning connector, they have also introduced new cables for USB and SD Card connection.
It is interesting to point out that the 3rd gen iPad with Retina display has been officially discontinued just 7 months since its introduction. The iPad 2 still remains as an entry level 9.7″ tablet at RM1,199. The new iPad is expected to be priced the same as the 3rd generation iPad when it was announced at RM1,499 for the 16GB WiFi model. Full details of the new iPad with Retina display over at their product page.
Read on for the iPad mini.
The anticipated iPad mini is set to be revealed this coming 23rd October at San Jose, California. The event is happening at 01:00 AM on 24th October Malaysia Time. Just like the iPhone 5, there isn’t much surprises left for the exterior design as dozens of photos have been leaked months before the big day.
What’s certain is Apple is releasing a smaller 7.85″ tablet which will go head on with the current crop of Kindles, Nexus 7 and other compact sized tablets. This could possibly cause some stir for Microsoft’s Surface tablets as well.
Recent rumours also suggest that the iPad mini will come with WiFi and WiFi+ Cellular variants in 2 colours options and a choice of 4 storage capacity from 8GB to 64GB. All shall be revealed exactly one week from now.

The iPad Mini is now said to be officially revealed in an event happening on 23rd October. It is pointed out that the date is on a Tuesday which is unusual considering Apple has often launched products on a Wednesday. However the timing of the launch is interestingly. It is exactly 3 days ahead of the purported Microsoft Surface tablet launch and one day ahead of Galaxy Note II US launch event.
So far the iPad Mini has been revealed in several leaks like the iPhone 5. In terms of hardware, there isn’t much details apart from a 7.85″ display and the use of the latest lightning connector. The launch of a smaller iPad may signify a shift of Apple’s direction as Steve Jobs had earlier dismissed tablets smaller than 10″ as dead on arrival.
Hopefully the iPad Mini will be able to WOW the crowd over the current crop of 7″ tablets.
