Apple admits iOS 5 causing battery issues

Posted:  November 3, 2011   By: ccsoya   9 comments

Been having battery life issues after updating to iOS 5? It turns out the latest iOS version is to blame for your device not running longer than normal. Apple in a statement to AllThingsD said that “a small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices”. Apple says the it has “found a few bugs that are affecting battery life” and will be releasing an update to fix the problem in a “few weeks”.

Apple didn’t say when exactly the bug-fix update will be released.

At the same time Apple has released iOS 5.0.1 for developers which contains the following improvements and bug fixes including:

  • Fixes bugs affecting battery life
  • Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
  • Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
  • Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
  • Contains security improvements

Multitasking Gestures for the original iPad means good news for the first-gen iPad owners who were disappointed that their device didn’t support the feature. Also the security improvements means that the iPad 2 should no longer be vulnerable to exploits using the Smart Cover.

Recover all your lost apps and data post iOS 5 update

Posted:  October 14, 2011   By: ccsoya   9 comments

So you’ve made the jump to iOS 5. While you’re looking forward to the over 200 improvements made in what is probably Apple’s most significant iOS update, things are not all hunky dory.

We’ve got a number of reports from users who’ve complained that they’ve lost almost all their data on their iOS device. After a successful iOS 5 update, you may notice that all your apps, songs and what nots have all gone missing. We experienced this as well right after our iOS update.

But don’t despair, your apps and other data are not permanently erased. If you’re one of the many that was affected by this, here’s a step-by-step guide from PCWorld on how can recover everything back.

The Solution

  1. Plug your device back into your PC and open up iTunes.
  2. Click on the device name (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) in the left-hand column.
  3. Click on “Sync” or “Apply” in the bottom-right corner of the screen (see screenshot below). iTunes should begin restoring any data you had on the device.
  4. Be patient. Syncing can take a very, very long time.
  5. After restoring, iTunes may ask if you want to transfer purchased items back to iTunes. You must click “Transfer,” or else those items will be deleted from your device.
  6. Click “Apply” at lower right to restore your device’s data from iTunes.
  7. If all else fails, you can click on the “Summary” tab under your device settings in iTunes, then click “restore.” You’ll see a dialog box that allows you to pick from a previous restore point. Choose a date prior to installing iOS5 (do not click “set up as new”). This will take you back to the way things were. Then, you can install iOS 5 afresh.

Bonus Tip: If above steps don’t work
If the above steps don’t work. Make sure that the “sync apps” box is clicked in the apps tab in iTunes. Click it, select the apps to transfer and hit apply.

Extra Bonus Tip: If you have not yet updated to iOS 5
Before anything, BACK UP and SYNC your iOS device FIRST!

Sync your device first by clicking on the device in the left-hand column of iTunes, then hitting the “Sync” button in the bottom right corner. That way, no matter what happens during installation, you’ll still have everything backed up.

Also the update may take a long time to complete, so just wait it out.

Hope these tips help. Enjoy your update and good luck!

Voice-to-text built into iOS 5

The iOS 5 has loads of cool features ripped-off from its competitors and here’s another one. It’s voice-to-text. As you can see in the screen cap, iOS 5 will allow users to say what they want to type and perhaps even control more advanced functions from their iOS device.

iOS 5 is still in beta and you should expect changes when the final version does come out with this feature. Also, it seems only iPhone and iPod touch will support the feature.

Voice-to-text is a cool feature but it is by no means new. The technology has been around for as long as we can remember and while early iterations of the technology have been laggy, impractical and basically useless, Google with Android have been key in bringing voice recognition to a point where it is now useful.

App developers like Vlingo, with its extensive support in Android, has also pushed the accuracy of voice recognition technology making a feature that was once reserved for geeks and those with patience, appeal to a wider mass audience.

But despite this, voice recognition hasn’t gained much traction. Apple has been known to bring the sexy back into old tech (For example: FaceTime = Video Call). So could voice-to-text come to age with Apple’s support? We certainly hope so. A mass adoption of this matured yet underused feature will push voice-to-text into the limelight and hopefully spur even more innovation for the benefit of us all.

iOS 5 feature: LED Flash for Alerts

Posted:  June 11, 2011   By: ccsoya   2 comments

Here’s one of the 200 new features that could be making its way out of iOS 5 beta and into your iPhone 4.

Embedded deep inside the Accessibility settings is the LED Flash for Alerts feature. The feature makes use of the LED flash on the iPhone 4 as a notification indicator when there is an incoming call or text message.

Those with iPhone 4 will know that the LED flash is plenty bright, so we don’t recommend switching on this feature if you don’t need it. There is a reason why the option to use the LED flash as a notification indicator is located inside the Accessibility settings. Get the hint.

Battle of the messengers: BBM vs iMessage

Posted:  June 10, 2011   By: ccsoya   4 comments

Ok so its pretty obvious that iMessage is an obvious rip off from RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger for BlackBerry. Both are platform exclusive, both allow you to send IMs, photos, videos, contacts and locations information. On top of that you have typing, delivered, received and read notifications as well. So in terms of features, there’s very little to differentiate the two — to the general users at least.

But how to they compare? Which service delivers messages faster? Which is more intuitive? Which one is better?

Take a look at the video to find out.

iOS 5: What features do iPhone 3GS users get?

Posted:  June 10, 2011   By: ccsoya   2 comments

For iOS users, the iOS 5 release is welcomed with much enthusiasm. There’s a lot to like about the many “new” (old for Android and to a certain extent Windows Phone users) features coming to the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone.

Speaking of iPhones, in the WWDC Steve Jobs did mention that iOS 5 will be available for the iPhone 3GS and while things like Notifications Centre, deep Twitter integration and native picture editing are all nice, many iPhone 3GS users are wondering what features will make it across to their not so cutting edge smartphone — one of us here at SoyaCincau.com still uses a 3GS too mind you.

Well the many enthusiasts out there who have gotten their hands on the iOS 5 beta are now coming back with their findings on the features that will be supported by the iPhone 3GS. You’ll be happy to note that most of the key features that make the iOS 5 special will be making it to the 3GS.

So far from reading the many posts, forums and comment threads about this topic, the known iOS 5 features supported by the iPhone 3GS that we can find include:

  • Notifications Centre, including lock screen display
  • Twitter integration looks to be all there as well
  • PC Free activation and synchronisation with iTunes, iCloud and everything else you can do over the air with iOS 5
  • Reminders works too. We’re not sure about the cool geo-tag triggers but its a safe bet to assume that that will make it across as well
  • Newsstand works but like iBooks and music/video purchases in iTunes, you’ll need a US Apple ID to be able to buy any content
  • Grid view in camera. This looks to be the only new feature in the camera app that will be coming to the 3GS. Native picture editing is missing very likely due to the lack of processing power
  • In Safari, Reading List and Reader is supported
  • iMessage is supported

What is currently missing from iOS 5 on the 3GS:

  • We’re not sure if the instant access camera button in the lock screen will make it across
  • Not sure if the volume button on the 3GS can work as a shutter release

Also, we’re not sure if iOS 5 will bring new ringtones and notifications sounds to the 3GS as well. Right now iPhone 4 users get all the new tones and sounds, while 3GS owners are stuck with the same old, though this is not really an issue for jailbroken 3GS.

That’s pretty much what we’ve found out. If you have gotten yourself the iOS 5 beta and have installed it on a 3GS because you are awesome, please do share with us your findings.

iOS 5 Features Overview: New but not groundbreaking

Posted:  June 7, 2011   By: soyacincau   19 comments

The WWDC 2011 is over and done with, and while we are hoping that Steve Jobs’ “one more thing” would be a new iPhone — which didn’t happen — his keynote revealed some pretty interesting stuff coming from Apple.

The iOS has been generally unchanged since it was first launched and at the same time Android has been evolving in such a short time span with both smart phone and tablet specific versions. So what’s new with iOS 5? If they are not releasing a brand new iPhone, there better be new features to make their devices appealing for today’s users. The Android platform has been moving in a rapid pace thanks to new hardware as well as custom software innovations by respective manufacturers. Read on as we run through the new key features.

VIDEO: iOS 5 Beta Preview on iPad 2. More magical than before

Posted:  June 6, 2011   By: soyacincau   1 comment

The iPad 2 is a magical device and the upcoming iOS 5 will make it even magical. Someone has managed to get their hands on the latest upgrade and here’s the hands-on video on the new iOS 5 features. As mentioned in the video, this is a “beta version” so there’s a lot of tweaking needed before its final version.
