For the longest time the Google Mobile app has been a bit of a hit and miss affair when it come to giving the fullest Google experience on the iPhone. We don’t know about you but the Google app for iPhone has always left us wanting more. We like the voice search function and the built-in browser but we don’t like that the browser will shutdown when you switch apps and honestly we’d save the hassle and just use Google right on Mobile Safari instead.
Well things are decidedly different now as Google has just released a major update for its iPhone app so much so that Google has even changed the name of the app. From Google Mobile App, it’s now simply called the Google Search app but don’t let the name confuse you, there is so much more you can do than just search with the new app.
The first thing you’ll notice is that the home screen is now completely different with a big Google logo and a search box. From the homepage you can easily sign into your Google account as well. On top of that, Google use swipe gestures to give you fast access to various features like apps and results filters. Its a pretty nice user experience overall.
One of our biggest gripe with the old Google iPhone app was when you switch app midway into your search. When you go back to the old Google app, you have to start your search all over again. The new Google Search app makes picking up where you left off much more convenient by simply tapping on the lower part of the page.
That’s just the skin of it. The new Google Search app for iPhone brings a lot more functionality than the old app which naturally, makes it more useful. It’s definitely something we recommend iPhone users out there try out.
In the meantime, head on over to after the jump for a short intro video of the new Google Search app for iPhone.

Google Mobile has now introduced Instant previews for mobile web searches. What it does is to preview screenshots of the websites before clicking on it. Pretty useful to search for contents visually. This is available for Android devices running 2.2+ and iOS 4.0+. It is available in 38 languages and also available for users in Malaysia.

Google has released a teaser in a form of a twitpic that its latest Android Gingerbread OS is coming out real soon. The original tweet by GoogleMobile says that their cafes are baking something sweet. Perhaps this is part of their internal launch within Google itself which possibly mean that the public announcement should be happening anytime next week. Now we are just wondering when exactly they will launch the actual OS.
As mentioned earlier, those using Google Nexus One should be getting a OTA update for Gingerbread soon.

Voice search, is something of a hit and miss in these here parts of the world. Though it’s not the voice recognition technology that’s to blame. More often than not its the context of the words that a person uses to search using speech on Google and also there’s a matter of localised names and terms that we use everyday in our searches.
So although being able to search the web hands-free is a boon, the inconvenience of having to repeat yourself a number of times to get the search term right is not. But that’s not saying that Google Voice Search is completely useless, and to illustrate how useful searching using just your voice can be Google has just released a series of short videos on its official Google Mobile YouTube channel. It’s also kind of cool that the videos are interactive.
Yeah, it’s all very Americanised but we have to say that Google’s voice recognition technology is pretty accurate even with non-American or British speaking tongues like us here in Malaysia.
Having said that however, we’d like to see Google attempt things a bit more localised considering that it has offices all over the world and not only Americans use Google search.
So what do you say Google, how about a Malaysian version of these Search by Voice short videos of yours?

Ok this might not have a lot to do about mobile phone or whatever but we like it and there’s a hefty showing of Google search on mobile, so it qualifies.
