DiGi introduces iPad specific data plans

Posted:  June 25, 2011   By: soyacincau   5 comments

DiGi today has introduced a number of broadband plans designed specifically for the iPad. While iPad uses broadband like any tablets or 3G modems, DiGi thinks there’s a good reason to market a new range of plans differently. Maxis has done the same a while back with plans between 3.5GB to 15GB.

So what’s DiGi offering? While Maxis expects high volume usage for tablets beyond the normal average, DiGi has taken a much realistic approach of smaller sized plans between 500MB and 6GB.

For the casual user, the entry level iPad Lite offers 500MB at RM30/month and if you do exceed this quota, DiGi is charging a low flat rate of 5sen/MB with a max cap of RM90. It is not clear whether the RM90 is the total maximum you pay per month or maximum for excess usage on top of your monthly RM30 commitment.

For the more demanding users, there’s the iPad Basic which offers 2GB at RM58/month and iPad Pro 6GB at RM88 a month. Both Basic and Pro offers unlimited access but speeds will be throttled to 128kbps upon reaching the cap. Throttling also applies for iPad Lite users once they reached their cap limit.

In terms of speed, they claim an average speed of 700kbps download and 200kbps upload. For more information on the plans, check out DiGi’s iPad plan page.

How does this compare with existing DiGi broadband offers? To us, DiGi is filling the gaps between its existing offering of 3GB to 16GB plans. If you’re using it primarily during the day, another cheap plan to consider is DiGi’s Discovery Day plan that offers 3GB/month but speeds are throttled at night.

There’s also a tiny note from DiGi at the bottom that customers are urged to check area of coverage before signing up. That’s a thoughful reminder as DiGi’s broadband current service leave much to be desired. Lately there has been a lot of complaints of DiGi 3G network due to connectivity issues. Last week their 3G network has down for an extended duration followed by their website unavailability for couple of days.

DiGi Broadband is doing a special promo bundling with ASUS where they are giving a free Asus Netbook tied with a 24 months contract of DiGi Explore 10GB plan. This whole deal costs RM108/month x 24 which is a total of RM2592 which can be paid with 0% interest installment via credit card or full cash payment upfront. If you’re a heavy user that’s on the move, the DiGi Explore plan is among the cheapest cost per GB when compared
with other mobile broadband plans. If DiGi works fine in your area, this is a worth while offer if you plan to use the service long term.

The Asus Netbook on offer is pretty standard with Intel Atom N455, 1GB RAM, 250GB Hard Disk with a 10.1″ LED display supporting 1024×600 resolution. You can check out the full specs here. If you’re interested, you can view the list of supporting outlets.

DiGi Discovery Day Time only plan now cheaper

DiGi’s Discovery Day broadband plan which offers 3GB of data for a mere RM38/month is now cheaper. If you order online now, you’ll get 50% off your subscription which makes it RM19/month which is rather a steal for cheap mobile broadband. The speed offered is average of 700kbps download and 200kbps upload.

image

However what they didn’t tell you up front is that this 50% promo is only valid for the 1st and 2nd month of your subscription. Such details is shown only when you hit the “More Info” button in the Online Store page. We all know Marketing gimmicks can be deceiving for customers but we don’t understand why can’t they be more up front on the terms. Most people might think that 50% applies throughout your subscription tenure when it is only valid for 2 months.

P1 too is doing something similar with their 50% promo but at least they make it visible that their 50% off is applicable only for 2nd and 3rd month. They are doing the same also for their new P1 MiFi device. Personally, we don’t look highly on such gimmicks and there’s gotta be a better way to promote their services clearly to potential customers.

Back to the Discovery Day Time offer, you can order this online with RM50 upfront payment where you get a SIM and RM50 credit which can last you more than 2 months subscription. If you need a short term broadband which you mainly use during the day, 3 months subscription without contract for this Discovery Day offer would only cost you RM76. After 7PM, you still can continue using it but download speeds are throttled down to 128kbps. If you need a 3G USB modem, you can add that in for additional RM100 at the online store.

More details at DiGi Online Store page.

DiGi rehashes broadband plans for iPad and Tablets

Posted:  December 20, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

DiGi is giving a boost for its broadband plans for tablet devices. On their website, it shows a picture of the iPad and the Galaxy Tab but neither of them are sold or bundled. While Maxis and Yes are pushing on iPad plans lately, DiGi obviously is not wanting to be left out. The iPad launched in Malaysia is only available for outright purchase, leaving consumers spoilt for choice when it comes to broadband choice. So this time around they had updated their DiGi Internet microsite to highlight the various options from prepaid to postpaid and also their MiFi device plan.

Just to recap, they offer prepaid plans as low as RM2/day with their RM2 Sure best promo but with download speeds limited at 384kbps. This offer is also extended to Happy Prepaid customers too. For postpaid, there’s an affordable RM38/day discovery day time only broadband with 3GB quota per month. If you need all time broadband, there’s the normal discovery plan at RM68/day with 3GB as well. For those with WiFi only devices, DiGi is offering a Huawei MiFi device on their higher explore plan with 16GB quota. DiGi postpaid speed is rated at an average of 700kbps for downloads.

Do check out our previous post on Broadband options for your iPad to discover more.

DiGi is bringing back its Discovery Day broadband plan. Just like the name, its a broadband plan that’s meant primarily for day time use. For RM38/month you’ll get 3GB of data and average speeds of 700kbps from 7AM to 7PM daily. You still can use it after 7PM but speeds will be throttled to 128kbps.  Previously this was offered as a time limited offer during PC Fair.

To save more from your monthly bill, DiGi is also giving RM5 rebate if you opt for auto-billing. This reduces your monthly subscription to a mere RM33/month.

For details, head to DiGi’s Broadband site.

DiGi offers Prepaid Internet in Micro SIM format

Posted:  October 3, 2010   By: soyacincau   1 comment

DiGi now offers its Prepaid Internet starter pack in Micro SIM format via its online store. Couple of weeks back, DiGi announced the availability of Micro SIM as a replacement of existing sims. If you have the need for cheap internet on devices like the iPad 3G, this could be a worthy solution.

DiGi prepaid internet Micro SIM kit is sold at RM25 and it comes with 5 days preloaded internet usage worth RM10. On an average, it only costs RM2/day to get online but the minimum top up is RM10 or 5 days straight. Other denominations are RM30, RM50 and RM100 with 15, 25 and 50 days access respectively. However like any prepaid internet offering from DiGi, the max speed is capped at 384kbps. If you need anything faster, we suggest looking somewhere else.

DiGi Prepaid Internet + Modem Bundle Promotion

Posted:  August 9, 2010   By: soyacincau   2 comments

DiGi is throwing a promotion for its DiGi Prepaid broadband on its online store. They are bundling a DiGi Prepaid starter pack and a Huawei E1550 USB Modem for RM169. The modem comes with 18 months warranty.

For the first 100 people who order online via Paypal, DiGi is giving additional RM70 rebate which is refunded back to your paypal account. This makes the bundle worth RM99 which is quite a steal. The refund will take about a month for them to process.

On the prepaid internet plan, the starter kit worth RM25 comes with 5 days of usage worth RM10. This prepaid internet plan is one of the cheapest at RM2/day but it requires a minimum of RM10 top up. This means you would need to use it for 5 days straight.

The biggest problem for this plan is the speed which is limited at 384kbps download and 128kbps upload. There is no daily data quota mentioned but on its FAQ the Fair Use Policy is fixed at 3GB a month which is rather odd. DiGi should have tied the data quota based on the top up duration/denomination.

This is a tough one to recommend as 384kbps is rather slow for broadband use. It doesn’t even go well with its Turbo3G claim since it is no faster than standard 3G speeds. Perhaps DiGi should offer more flexible options such as U Mobile that offers various speed and data quota.

DiGi MiFi price and plan revealed

Posted:  July 7, 2010   By: soyacincau   6 comments

DiGi has finally revealed its MiFi package which bundles the Huawei MiFi device. The MiFi device is priced at RM360 for upfront purchase however it doesn’t seem that you can buy the device without a contract. The DiGi MiFi is bundled with DiGi Broadband Explore package that comes with 16GB monthly data with a discounted price of RM128 from the original RM158.

DiGi Broadband Explore package speed is rated an average of 700kbps download and 200kbps upload. If you exceed your data quota, broadband speeds will be throttled down to 128kbps.

DiGi’s marketing message is that you get the MiFi device for free but on a rebate basis that they discounted RM30 for 12 months which translate to the same RM360 you paid for upfront. After the 12 months contract period, the normal subscription of RM158 will be charged. For extra savings, DiGi will rebate additional RM5 per month if you opt to pay the subscription via autopay.

When DiGi first started accepting pre-booking of the MiFi device, we did mentioned about some issues with the Huawei Device which they have kind of “rectified”. At RM360, this looks like a better deal than the D-Link Pocket WiFi device.
