Dell discontinues Streak 5 tablet

Posted:  August 14, 2011   By: soyacincau   5 comments

The Dell Streak that was launched a year ago was one of the most anticipated Android devices to enter the market last year. Unfortunately local launch delays and expensive pricing had hindered its success in Malaysia.

Earlier this week, Dell has officially announced that the Dell Streak 5 has been discontinued, leaving behind its 7 incher Dell Streak 7 as their sole Android tablet right now. In Malaysia, Maxis is the only telco offering the Dell Streak 5 and outright it is still offered at RM2099, which is RM500 more than the Galaxy Tab 7 or the same price as a 4.3″ Samsung Galaxy S II. On contract, it is offered as low as RM999 over 24 months contract with minimum 1.5GB data plan on Maxis.

The Streak could have been the first tablet to hit Malaysia but each delay had made it less appealing. Even now, the price is still ridiculously high. Maxis and Dell should relook into its dated pricing as there are other cheaper and better alternatives in the market today.

While the 5-inch Dell Streak is still no where to be found here. Dell is already busy working on the details for the launch of a 7-inch version of the Dell Streak and here is the proof.

Engadget chanced upon what looks to be a full storyboard treatment of an upcoming Dell commercial starring the 7-inch Dell Streak. You take a look at the stroryboard in full here.

The commercial shows the 7-inch Streak’s features along with the new Stage UI skin seen on the 5-inch Streak. You also get to see Dell’s new slogan “You can tell it’s Dell” along with the name of the device — Streak 7.

With CES just a couple of weeks away, is a safe bet that we’re going to get to see this new Streak making an appearance at the show. As always, you know you can get the latest right here at SoyaCincau.com

Dell Streak finally gets Froyo, starting from the UK

Posted:  November 14, 2010   By: soyacincau   1 comment

Finally, the Dell Streak is getting its Android 2.2 Froyo Update! The announcement came from Dell UK which says that Dell Streak users will be getting the OTA Froyo updates in stages starting from the UK. This puts the Streak on par with the Samsung Galaxy Tab in terms of Android OS version.

Earlier on, Dell was said to be skipping its Android 2.1 upgrade and instead focus directly in delivering Android 2.2. That’s just one month ago and we must say that they delivered earlier than expected. Looks like Dell is doing a better job than Sony Ericsson which has just released Android 2.1 upgrade recently.

Now the next question, when will the Dell Streak be officially available in Malaysia and how much will it be?

Dell launches global re-branding campaign with new TV ad

Posted:  November 1, 2010   By: ccsoya   No comments

UPDATE: Updated with Full length version of the Dell Streak ad.

You might know it but Dell has just started a global re-branding exercise to become the PC industry’s “most loved brand“.

And while in our minds the name Dell is synonym with no-nonsense, good value for money PCs, laptops and monitors, far be it from us to profess our love to the brand and we’re sure that many of you out there feel the same way. It’s not to say that Dell is a bad name, far from it, Dell is a strong and trusted brand but to be positioned as the “most loved brand” is going to be a tall order for Dell.

We don’t see a lot of Dell TV ads here in Malaysia, so it’s going to difficult to compare this new treatment with Dell’s previous advertising campaigns but the company claims this new series of ads represents a new approach for the brand. Where previously Dell commercials tend to highlight a product’s specifications, cost and ordering details, this new series hopes to draw customers in and forge an emotional connection with viewers by showing how its technology enables relationships. Dell hopes the new ad will convey its evolution into a more consumer-centric company.

The new ad stars the Dell Streak and highlights its various features in a somewhat real-life setting. Take a look at the new TV ad after the jump ad tell us what you think.

Dell Streak hits Indonesia and Vietnam, Malaysian launch soon?

Posted:  November 1, 2010   By: ccsoya   6 comments

Surprise, surprise! The Dell Streak was recently launched in Vietnam and Indonesia making these two amongst the first countries in the region to market the device. The Streak retails for VND14,990,000 or about RM2,395.00 in Vietnam and INR6,250,000 or about RM2,178.

Price wise the Dell Streak looks to be comparable with the similarly spec-ed Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Desire. In fact, if you take into account the screen-size of the Streak, it looks to be offering a better value and if you consider the possibility of a contract bundle with a local telco then, the Streak is set to be the cheapest tablet to hit Malaysia (barring the fact that the Streak runs an archaic Android 1.6).

Although speculating the price of the Dell Streak in Malaysia is interesting, what has got us very intrigued is the Malaysian launch date of the device.

If you recall earlier, we picked up a news report from Reuters that quoted Steve Felice the president of Dell’s small and medium business unit who said that the Dell Streak will be making it’s APAC debut only in 2011. On the other hand, Dell Malaysia replied to our Twitter question saying that the Dell could hit Malaysia as early as November — this comes two days after the Reuters report.

We’ve gotten in touch with Dell Malaysia right after that to verify when exactly will the Streak come to Malaysia and Dell PR tells us that the Reuters report is correct, meaning the Streak will only be on sale in Malaysia some time next year.

But with the Dell Streak now launched in Indonesia and Vietnam, it’s very possible that plans have changed at Dell and that we could see a Dell Streak launch in time for end-year holiday season. We have a feeling that the first targeted November launch could happen but Dell PR is tight-lipped about this so we’ll just have to keep a really close eye on the developments at Dell Malaysia to give you the latest update on the Streak, so keep it locked on!

Dell Streak skips Android 2.1 update, to release Froyo by year end

Posted:  October 14, 2010   By: soyacincau   2 comments

According to the latest update, Dell will stop concentrating on rolling out Android 2.1 eclair on its 5″ Dell Streak but instead focuses on rolling out Froyo directly.

It seems that it takes more effort to update 2.1 and it makes more sense to go straight to the latest Froyo directly. Dell is said to be committed to deliver their Froyo update before 2010 is out. Let’s hope they stick to their word and not becoming another Sony Ericsson which is still stuck with good old 1.6 Donut.

If Dell is going to release the 5″ Tablet in Malaysia, it better come with Froyo considering Samsung will debut its 7″ Galaxy Tab with Froyo running already.

Dell Streak launches in India sells for a ridiculously high price

Posted:  October 6, 2010   By: ccsoya   2 comments

Dell’s 5in Android tablet made it’s debut in India yesterday, and while that may not be anything out of the ordinary, it’s retail selling price might make you go WTF.

The Streak, still running Android 1.6, retails for Rs. 34,990 which is about RM2,436 which is a little more than a 16GB iPhone 4 but waaay too much for a 5in Android 1.6 tablet. Here’s another way to look at it, a 16GB iPad 3G in Singapore sells for SG$928 or about RM2,191.

We’re not sure why the Streak is priced so high in India, in the US the devices retails for US$549.99 or roughly RM1,703 and that’s a reasonable price for something like the Streak.

Dell Malaysia has told us that the Streak will only be coming next year, let’s hope the pricing is closer to the what people in the US are paying for it rather than what people in India are.

Dell Streak: November launch in Malaysia, not going to happen

Posted:  September 6, 2010   By: ccsoya   2 comments

Earlier, we picked up a Reuters report quoting a certain Mr. Steve Felice, who happens to be the president of Dell’s small and medium business unit, who said that the Streak will only be entering APAC markets in the first quarter of next year.

But on the other hand we’ve got the official Twitter account for Dell Malaysia telling us that the Streak could be here as early as November. So who are we to listen to? Is the Reuters report inaccurate or did Dell Malaysia somehow miscommunicated the launch period for the Streak?

As it turns out Dell Malaysia might have gotten the launch period for the Streak mixed up. We’ve received official email from a representative of Dell PR confirming that the Streak will come to APAC next year and not in November as earlier mentioned.

It’s a bummer that those who are interested in the Dell Streak will have to wait at least another four months for the Streak to hit APAC, a Malaysian launch would probably take longer. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that Malaysia will be amongst the first markets in APAC to get the Streak.

But on the other hand, this could be a blessing in disguise. As you already know the Streak is currently running the super old Android 1.6. Although running Android 1.6 the Dell Streak sill manages to look snappy and responsive in the videos that we’ve seen, the archaic OS is not going to cut the mustard against iPads running on iOS 4.2 and Samsung Galaxy Tabs running on the latest and greatest Android 2.2. A later APAC launch could mean we might be getting, at the very least, Android 2.1.

Let’s hope that this will be the case.

Dell Malaysia says Streak could be here as early as November

Posted:  August 24, 2010   By: ccsoya   2 comments

This is interesting, looks like the Reuters report might be a bit off is saying that the Dell Streak’s APAC debut will be in 2011.

Dell Malaysia has confirmed with us via Twitter that the Streak could be here as early as November.

So we’re hoping that they keep their word on this. In the meantime we’re wondering if a telco will offer the Streak with a contract bundle. Our crystal ball says, very high possibility.

Dell Malaysia says stay tuned. So we will be, and you should too. Keep it locked on to SoyaCincau.com for the latest Dell Streak updates.

On and, thanks for replying @dellmsia. Now about that review unit, what say you?

Samsung Galaxy S and Dell Streak displays use ultra tough Gorilla Glass

Posted:  August 24, 2010   By: ccsoya   6 comments

Guess many Galaxy S onwers out there will have a smug smile on their faces after they read this post knowing that their device is as tough as nails — well the display is at least..

Corning, the makers of tough pots as we have always recalled, has announced that its ultra tough Gorilla Glass is being used to protect the display of the Samsung Galaxy S.

A little rummaging through the interweb also revealed that Dell Streak display is also protected by Gorilla Glass.

What is Gorilla Glass you ask? Corning says, Gorilla Glass is an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass that is both scratch resistant and durable.

We wonder how the Gorilla Glass compares with the trick helicopter glass on the iPhone 4, or could Corning’s Gorilla Glass and the one on the iPhone 4 is the same? We are inclined to think otherwise.

Other device with Gorilla Glass? Here’s a list of devices we know that are available in Malaysia with Gorilla Glass.

LG
GD900 Crystal, GD910 Watch Phone, BL40 New Chocolate

Motorola
Droid, Milestone

Samsung
S3650 Corby

How tough is the Gorilla Glass? Check out a video we have after the jump where the people at Engadget went all berserk on the Dell Streak’s display. If the people from TechCentral are reading this, that’s how you show a display is as tough as nails.

If Dell Malaysia is reading this, loan us a unit already. You know we’re good for it.
