Like everything else that you buy, there’s a cost involved in manufacturing a mobile phone. That’s very obvious. But what is not so obvious is how much of this cost goes to where — as in, how much does a manufacturer spend per component in the device.
Data and visualization experts at Tableau have put together a very interesting visualization of how much each component costs in some of the more popular smart phones in the market. Tableau is quick to point out that the number presented in the table are estimates and does not include marketing and other costs.
Some interesting points to ponder from the data:
So what do you think? Are the cost of the components in the device listed justified?

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is finally offered by DiGi after a long wait of ROI process. As usual, DiGi’s blackberry devices are bundled with its DG Smart Plan which is a mobile internet focused plan at RM68/month. Just recently they started charging extra RM10/month for BIS service, making it RM78/month for Blackberry users.
The BlackBerry Torch is sold at RM2299 outright which is similar with Maxis. This is slightly more than Celcom‘s RM2188 RRP pricing. However if you go on contract, the Torch is yours for RM1499 over 24 months or RM1749 over 12 months.

UPDATE: The RM999 BlackBerry Torch offer will be available at selected 9 DiGi centres: Sunway Pyramid, Soho KL, SS2 PJ, Berjaya Times Square, Klang BBT One, Pulau Tikus, Api-Api KK, Seremban and Ipoh. 300 units are spread among the 9 outlets. RM999 offer price is for 24 months contract of DG SmartPlan at RM78/month. RM500 extra upfront payment is required. Normal price is RM1499 with 24 months contract. Details are now on DiGi’s site
Original Post: DiGi has tweeted that the BlackBerry Torch will be offered from as low as RM999 tomorrow, 11 November! This is valid only for the first 300 customers which the details have yet to be revealed. Will it be another BlackBerry Torch fire sale at an undisclosed location? Or is it for those who pre-register before? We won’t know until tomorrow, perhaps at midnight tonight. We believe DiGi will offer that price bundled together with its DG Smart Plan.
DiGi is the third telco in Malaysia to offer the BlackBerry Torch after Celcom and Maxis which had revealed theirs couple of weeks ago. Celcom’s RRP for the Torch is at RM2188 while Maxis offers it at RM2299. Let’s see if DiGi can offer it lower.

We’ve gotten ourselves a BlackBerry Torch at the Celcom sale last Friday and we’re in the midst of reviewing the unit now. In the meantime we’d like to find out from you if there’s anything you like to know about the device.
If you have any questions about the BlackBerry Torch or would like us to cover some features of the device in the review. Please let us know. We’ll try to make it happen.
As always, thanks for dropping by.

Celcom Axiata is expecting to sell 10,000 BlackBerry Torch by end of this year. That is about 167 Torches a day! They also claim to be the market leader for BlackBerry in Malaysia which they boasts a user base of over 100,000 BlackBerry users which makes up to 51% of the market share.
What’s more interesting is that Celcom also plans to launch the new BlackBerry Bold in a few months time. The Bold in question should be the latest BlackBerry Bold 9780 which was just announced yesterday. Considering we are about 2 months until the year is out, we’re expecting them to launch or initiate another “registration of interest” somewhere in January.

Celcom has gotten the bigger spotlight today for the BlackBerry Torch but let’s not forget that Maxis too is launching theirs as well.
So the plans are out and just like we mentioned earlier, it is offered as low as RM1399 over 24 months on BIS Pro. The rest of the contract price are shown above.
So what is BIS Pro and how does this bundling work? Well Maxis has changed the way their bundle BlackBerry devices and did some revision on their postpaid BIS plans.

The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is heating up today with both Celcom and Maxis releasing their plans. Right now all eyes are on Celcom as they are doing a firesale that offers the Torch from as low as RM8.

So how much is it on Celcom? If you’re on Celcom Exec 50 the Torch goes for RM1688 with Blackberry Lite or RM1588 with BlackBerry Pro. For the heavy users, the Torch is yours for RM1388 on Celcom Exec 250 + BIS. If you don’t want to be tied down, there’s a no commitment RRP price of RM2188. This is cheaper than Maxis‘s promotional BlackBerry Torch RRP price of RM2299.
