The Mobile World Congress has always been an exciting event for mobile enthusiasts. Tons of new phones, tons of new devices and a whole lot of people. But smartphone manufacturers have begun to hijack the crowd that will be going to MWC and have their own launch event just before it.
Two tech giants have done exactly that — LG and Samsung — but while it was very likely the LG G5 would be revealed on 21 February, we never had any confirmation…until now. LG USA has released three teaser images featuring the number 5 plus a caption reading #LGG5, February 21st. #MWC2016″. #Hype?
Worth noting that LG USA has since removed the tweet. Was it a blunder or an intentional tease?
This means the G5 and Samsung’s dynamic Galaxy S7 duo will go head to head on the same day. While we’ve heard a lot of exciting specs about these two devices, we want to know is, which would you get?

Big smartphone manufacturers seem to love adding variants to their popular devices so you can pretty much expect at least two versions of what is essentially the same smartphone (or at least under the same line) that will cater to different people’s needs. Huawei isn’t bucking this trend as new information has surfaced that they’re launching four different variants of their upcoming P9 handset — one more than last year. What’s more, the fourth device will feature a dual rear camera setup.
OPPO has just announced the R7 Plus FC Barcelona Edition a few moments ago. Dubbed as the Smart phone of Champions, this is produced for the die-hard Barca fans worldwide. Based on their current premium phablet, it carries the same specs underneath but it gets a couple of extras in the form of accessories and with something extra on the exterior.
OPPO is currently one of FC Barcelona’s official partner and it gives the Chinese smart phone maker great visibility over at Camp Nou. To celebrate its 3 year partnership, OPPO has introduced its R7 Plus FC Barcelona Edition, clad with the Catalan’s football team insignia.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 is probably the biggest anticipation at Barcelona and if you haven’t seen it yet, its exterior has been leaked in its full glory. Now more details have surfaced regarding its storage capacities and colour options.
In the previous Galaxy S series, they were announced with several storage options. However for us Malaysians, we often end up with the base 16GB model. Granted that you can expand it further with microSD, there are those who prefer more on-board storage to install more apps.
It’s going to be a crazy week at Mobile World Congress 2014 next week and Samsung is looking to be the most prominent brand there with the launch of the Galaxy S5. Details of the device have been trickling in since a couple of weeks back and this latest teaser is telling us that aside from the rumoured premium and basic versions, the 2k display and expected new software features, Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphone could also be waterproof (or at least water resistant) and come with a slow-mo camera mode not unlike what you get with the iPhone 5S.
If this is indeed true then the Galaxy S5 along with the Note 4 will be tough acts for other operators to follow this year. Head on over to after the jump to view the video and let us know what you think.

The new unpacked 5 image shown above highlights several key areas which ends with the power of 5. This covers speed, outdoor, curiosity, fun, social, style, privacy, fitness and life. All of these points to a next level of personalisation, which is seen as a continuation of Galaxy S4‘s Life Companion. It is like likely that some of these new features especially sports and fitness will take full advantage of its pairing with a new Galaxy Gear 2 smart watch.
A couple of leaked user interface also suggests a customised interface that’s similar to HTC’s BlinkFeed. In summary, apart from the usual upgraded hardware, there’s a lot to look forward to in the software department as well.
To recap, the Unpacked 5 event is happening on 24th of February and it will be streamed live on Samsung’s Youtube channel at 3AM on 25th February Malaysian time.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 is expected to launch in less than 3 weeks at their upcoming Unpacked 5 event in Barcelona. While the device is still a well kept secret, a New York Times report has revealed additional details through a source that’s close to Samsung.
The new Galaxy S5 launch is said to be low-key compared to previous Unpacked events and they confirmed improvements in camera as well as processor. The Galaxy S5 is speculated to run on either a Exynos 6 or Snapdragon 805 processor depending on variant while the camera is said to be sporting a 16MP sensor. Interestingly, the report downplays speculation of a higher QHD (Quad-HD) display and they are expecting Samsung to stick to the mainstream Full HD 1080p displays. It also shot down rumours that an eye scanner would be introduced in the new flagship device.
The Galaxy Gear smart watch which was introduced 5 months ago is expected to be replaced with a Galaxy Gear 2 sequel. The new watch is expected to pack more features and we hope a much longer battery life with water resistance would be included.
