2017 was a fascinating year for smartphones and mobile tech in general. There were a lot of ups, a lot of downs and some pretty weird stuff along the way but there’s no denying that it was an eventful year.
Now that we’re on the cusp of the next wave of new products for 2018, we thought it’d be cool to take a look at some of the highs and some of the lows in 2017.

ASUS has made a lot of moves in the smartphone market but one of their biggest moves has to be combining the virtual reality capabilities of Google’s Daydream with the augmented reality ones of Google’s Project Tango into a single smartphone. Yep, we’re talking about the ASUS ZenFone AR.
This is what you get with the RM3,799 behemoth of a smartphone.
UPDATE: The ZenFone AR has been officially launched in Malaysia! Here are the details.
ASUS Malaysia is launching the ZenFone AR this afternoon and it’s the world’s first smartphone that’s Google Tango AR and Daydream VR enabled. It’s also the world’s first phone to be announced with 8GB RAM earlier this year.
Being a feature packed device, you should realistically expect the ZenFone AR to cost more than the ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe that was announced with a starting price of RM2,599. Instead, it costs more than that. Even more than the Samsung Galaxy S8+.
UPDATE: ASUS Malaysia has updated that the ZenFone AR launch is happening on 4 July instead.
Computex is a place where a whole lot of really cool stuff happens. This year at the ASUS booth, the coolest thing — besides the new launches, of course– is the fact that we get to see (and try out) ASUS’s brand new Tango and Daydream enabled smartphone, the ZenFone AR, in action.
The best part? ASUS also revealed when the phone will hit Malaysian shores.
We saw this as a leak earlier but now it’s official. The ASUS ZenFone AR is the first smartphone in the world to be Tango-enabled and Daydream VR ready. This means it’ll be able to handle Virtual and Augmented reality.
ASUS is launching two smartphones tomorrow and it will be their first smartphone with Google Tango technology. Expected to be called the ASUS ZenFone AR, it comes equipped with several cameras at the back for augmented reality.
With just two weeks away until CES 2017, ASUS has just released its teaser video for its upcoming Zennovation launch event. Now we can confirm that they would be launching not one but two new ZenFones to kick off 2017.
