Yes Android users, the Android Market (along with other services like Google Music and Google eBookstore) is no more, in its place Google has created a service called “Google Play” where you get apps, games, movies, music and books, all in one place.
Google would like you to think of Google Play as your “digital entertainment destination” and while you might not see much of a difference in the Android Market at the moment, in the coming days, the Android Market icon will change to “Google Play Store” icon.
Google Play is Google’s attempt to bringing some serious threat to Apple’s dominant iTunes service for music and video and also to compete more aggressively with Amazon’s Kindle service allowing users to access content seamlessly across platforms be it on their Android device or the Web.
Unfortunately though most of the great features on Google Play are – at the moment – not available to Malaysian users, this is because beyond apps, there are really not much else we can purchase online via the service. Content like music, videos and books are not available for most Malaysians to purchase online. This is mostly because of copyrights issues that need to be sorted out. For now, we can only hope for the ability to purchase content online come to Malaysia soon.
In any case, to celebrate the launch of Google Play, Google is offering massive discounts for a lot of great apps like “World of Goo” (US$0.49) and “Where’s My Water?” (US$0.25). The SwiftKey X Keyboard is also on offer going for US$0.49 in conjunction with the launch of Google Play

Thanks @EiffelMalaysia for sending this in
Google has announced that it will be rolling out a new version of the Android Market in the coming weeks for Android phones running 2.2 or above.
The new Android Market will allow book purchases and movie rental directly from your Android device and make them available across all your other devices via your Google account without the need for wires. This is great stuff but unfortunately it will be available in limited countries starting from the US. Don’t hold your breath hoping for these features to come to Malaysia.
Aside from that, the one thing that’s relevant to all Android users is the major overhaul of the look and feel of the market.
The design makes finding the apps you want and discovering news apps much easier. It’s also more enjoyable to use compared to the various other iterations of the app. The introduction of app collections like staff picks and Editors’ Choice apps are much welcomed as well.
Overall the new Android Market is great and a joy to use. How do we know? Where using it now and you can to. No rooting or hacking required. All you need to do is click on the link below from your computer, drag the installer into your Android’s memory card and from your Android device click install, and there you go, you’re using the new Android Market.
Try out the new Android Market for yourself now. Just remember, you need to be running Android 2.2 or above.
Enjoy!

The moment most Android users have been waiting for is here. Google has announced availability of paid apps to more markets which includes Malaysia.
We tried to buy an app from the market’s website but we couldn’t manage to do so. It kept prompting us to re-sign into our account again. However it can be done through the mobile market app. Credit card is the only payment channel at the moment via Google Checkout.
The exchange rate that Android market used is currently US$1 = RM2.98, which makes games like Robo Defense costing RM8.92 (US$2.99) in our local currency. This couldn’t come at a better time since the dollar is cheaper right now.
Another new feature in the Market is Editor’s choice which features the Top rated apps by Google. This makes it easier to discover apps that are worth downloading.
Thanks everyone who buzzed us in the comments and twitter!
AD: Liked the Android Mini Collectable in the photo above? You can get it from The Taken Shop.
