Sleep, a pastime of all that walk this earth. We need it to function but often don’t bother getting enough of it. For humans, at least, that’s a proposition that is a paradox in itself. Personally, there has never been an issue getting up from the bed but we can all nod in agreement about some people in our lives that hit that snooze button a handful of times.

Often some of them never leave their pillow fort but for those who really have commitments worth getting up for, the Ruggie could be something for you.

Ruggie in as the name implies, is a floor mat that doubles as an alarm clock and for it to stop ringing, you’ll actually have to get out of bed – you can’t snooze it either.

How do you shut Ruggie off? You place both your feet onto the “smart” mat for a good three seconds. We’re not too sure how perceptive Ruggie is as the video doesn’t really “show” it working as advertised.

After it has got to up and at em’ the alarm will shut off and start playing customisable motivational speeches and humorous phrases to get your day moving with some positivity – more of a novelty feature but it’s still nice to have – I mean, having Schwarzenegger himself give you a speech every morning to “Get to the chopaaaa/showerrrrr” would be really cool.

Crowdsourcing their effort on Kickstarter, Ruggie has already surpassed its goal of US$ 50,000 in just five days. Battery powered by three AAA batteries, Ruggie will go without a battery swap for at least a year.

Pledges for the “smart” rug currently start at US$ 110 ( RM 484) with shipping to Malaysia going for an additional US$ 21 (RM 92.52). The pledge gets you:

One Ruggie
One USB cable for charging and transferring those motivational speeches
One Bonus Ebook

Before the Ruggie came into the picture, we never thought they’d be so many quirky and innovative alarm clocks. Some require you to bust out 30 bicep curls; Clocky makes snoozers run around their bedroom to locate the wheeled alarm clock; and BanClock requires the sleeper to put actual coins into it, making a point that time is money. You can find a full list here.

Whenever backing a Kickstarter project be aware that some projects are never delivered to backers, disappointing we know but it’s something we’ll have to live with. Make sure you raise any concerns in the comment section and run through the FAQs before you do so.

So what do you think? Will this make its way into your bedrooms? Well if the answer is a yes there’s gonna be a long wait – Ruggie’s Kickstarter states that “deivery” (assuming they meant delivery) will only happen in September of this year.

That’s a lot of snoozing till then.
