HTC has been releasing one too many devices starting with its One M9 flagship followed by its bigger One M9+ and One E9+ models. The One M9 boasts a high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor while the One M9+ gets a higher Quad HD resolution display but the compromise is it runs on a MediaTek processor underneath.
If you still prefer HTC and if you’re looking for the ultimate device, the new Butterfly 3 could be the One you’re looking for. It gets a similar 5.2″ Quad HD Super LCD3 display, an Octa-Core 64-bit Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM and a decent 32GB of storage that you can expand with microSD. Like the current Butterfly 2, there’s also water and dust resistance rated at IP55/IP57. All sounds good but there’s one disadvantage compared to the current One models.
With a high end display and processor, you would expect HTC to power this up with a larger battery but instead, it gets just a 2,700mAh capacity unit. As comparison, the HTC One M9 and One M9+ gets a larger 2,840mAh. This is quite surprising since the Butterfly series that targets the lifestyle segment is expected to get more specs for your buck. For example the Butterfly 2 had a 2,700mAh unit versus the former One M8 flagship’s 2,600mAh capacity.
It is 2015 and high-end 5″ smart phones should come with at least 3,000mAh capacity batteries for an all-day usage. Even with Samsung’s optimised display, processor and storage, we only managed to get about 11-14 hours of average use per charge on the Galaxy S6 edge (2,600mAh battery).
For taking pictures, HTC is throwing everything they’ve got with a main 20.2MP Duo Camera set up similar to the One M9+. Selfie lovers would be in for a treat, as there’s a front shooter with higher 13MP unit. At the front, you also get HTC’s famed Boom Sound stereo speakers enhanced with Dolby Audio and out of the box, it runs on the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop. Overall, the Butterfly 3, which is called as the J Butterfly in Japan weighs 162 grams with a thickness of 10.1mm. That’s slightly lighter by a mere 6 grams than the metal clad One M9+.
There are 3 colour options available – Red, White and Indigo Blue which comes with a glossy polycarbonate back. At the moment it is released only in Japan and it is expected to be made available internationally in the months to come.
