Samsung Malaysia is releasing their first range of tablets for 2015 with the arrival of the Galaxy Tab A. Unlike the past tablets from Samsung, the Galaxy Tab A series is now going for a squarish 4:3 display aspect ratio like the iPad instead of the usual 16:9 wide screen display.

From its launch in Russia and most recently in the US, the Galaxy Tab A will come in 2 sizes – a compact 8″ and a 9.7″ size. Both are having similar processors, with a 64-bit Quad-Core Snapdragon 410 but the 9.7″ gets 2GB RAM while the smaller 8″ unit settles for 1.5GB. There’s 16GB of on-board storage but you can expand with microSD up to 128GB extra. For the US market, Samsung is throwing additional 100GB of OneDrive storage for 2 years, which is similar to the Galaxy S6.

For taking pictures, it gets a 5MP main and 2MP front camera and out of the box, it runs on the latest Android 5.0 with TouchWiz on top. Both models are available in WiFi and 4G LTE models and keeping the lights on is a 4,200mAh battery on the 8″ and 6,000mAh capacity unit on the full sized 9.7″ version. Probably the biggest let down would be the display, as it settles for a lower 1024 x 768 resolution. How well does it all hold together? We’ll find out next week as the local media event is happening on 29th April. Stay tuned for further details on the Galaxy Tab A for our Malaysian market.
