If these benchmark results are real, the Galaxy S6 Edge is a serious speed demon

Samsung has decided not to use Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 810 processor in their upcoming Galaxy S6 flagship model. For those who are concerned about its performance, its alleged Antutu benchmark result has appeared and it looks very promising.

From its model number SM-G925W8, this is likely to be its higher-end Galaxy S6 Edge that comes with a curved display. It is listed with Samsung’s newer Exynos 7420 processor that’s clocked at 2.1GHz.

While the current Exynos 5433 (from the Note 4) and Snapdragon 810 processors are based on a 20nm fabrication process, the newer 64-bitExynos 7420 Octa-Core processor is based on a much finer 14nm manufacturing process, which should lead to greater performance and power efficiency. The Antutu listing also shows a combination of 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage, which brings the new Galaxy S device to typical Galaxy Note territory.

The display is shown to be a 5.1″ (likely Super AMOLED) with a Quad HD resolution of 2560×1440. Strangely there’s no extra display width like the current Galaxy Note Edge that does 2560×1600. For imaging, it gets a 20MP main shooter and a front facing 5MP camera for selfies. As you would expect for a 2015 flagship, it runs on the newer Android 5.0.2 Lollipop out of the box.

In terms of performance, the upcoming Galaxy S6 Edge has set a rather high 60,978 Antutu score which is about 10,000 points more than the number crushing Meizu MX4 and its current Exynos based Galaxy Note 4. The biggest area of improvement is its 3D performance, where it sets a huge gap with its ARM Mali-T760 GPU. Qualcomm which has always been associated with top of the line performance is starting to feel the heat coming from Samsung’s Exynos. Even for the Galaxy Note 4, its Exynos variant appears to be a better than its Snapdragon 805 counterpart in both performance and battery life.

The exterior design of the Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant is still up in the air. If these benchmark results are to be believed, the other flagship Snapdragon 810 powered smart phone brands should start worrying. All shall be revealed this coming 1st March in Barcelona.
