Gphone which used to be offering entry level smart phones has just announced its high end Android offering. The new GPhone EVO is a True Octa-Core smart phone with an affordable price tag of RM899.

It gets a 5″ IPS display with 720p HD resolution and the EVO is powered by MediaTek’s MT6592 1.7GHz Octa-Core processor that’s mated with 1GB of RAM. On-board it gets a 16GB of storage. The device also supports Dual-SIM cards with one slot being a micro-SIM and the other having a regular mini-SIM slot. Similar to the Alcatel One Touch Idol X+, it lacks 4G LTE but it supports 3G HSPA+ on both sim slots.

The EVO also gets a removable 2,000mAh battery which supposed to last the whole day due to MediaTek’s frugal power management. It also comes with a 13MP camera at the back which shoots Full HD 1080p video while the front gets a 5MP camera. At time of writing, the EVO is currently running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean but GPhone says that KitKat will be available through OTA (Over The Air) update.

In terms of build quality, the EVO could have been better if it uses a matte finish for its back cover. The metallic paint looking glossy back cover is quite a fingerprint magnet. Design wise, it feels nicely weighted in the hands and placement of volume rocker on the left and power button on the right makes it friendly for single handed use. Oddly, the micro USB charging port is located at the top. The 5″ display is decent and pushes a pixel density about 293ppi (Pixels Per Inch). It has great viewing angles since it is an IPS display and uses OGS (One Glass Solution) to minimise thickness.

GPhone is banking heavily on MediaTek’s Octa-Core processor features on the EVO. Apart from benchmark performance, the MT6592 processor boast lower heat, longer battery life and Ultra HD video playback. There’s a ClearMotion video enhancer that pushes normal 25fps/30fps video frame rates up to 60fps with minimal blur. MediaTek has also collaborated with GameLoft to showcase its full processor potential in gaming. The upcoming 8-core optimised Modern Combat 5 will be bundled for free on the device once it is available.

The GPhone EVO will be available next week and comes in a single black colour option. More images of the device after the break.
