First 4G LTE Phone: Samsung SCH-R900

Posted:  July 31, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

WiMAX now has something to look out for. Samsung’s LTE Phone (SCH-R900) has just been approved by FCC, the Federal Communications Commission that regulates communication device. This means a 4G LTE Phone is closer to reality, which give WiMAX players necessary competition in the 4G space. Not much has been revealed about the device but it could be either using Samsung’s Bada OS or Android.

Today, there are 2 notable 4G WiMAX phones, the HTC EVO 4G and the Samsung Epic 4G.

When it comes to 4G, there’s always debate between LTE and WiMAX on delivering true 4G service. So far WiMAX has been very visible with the introduction of various WiMAX phones and even most recently WiMAX notebooks. LTE’s camp has been strongly opposing WiMAX as 4G which they claim LTE being superior. We would say talk is cheap especially when there’s nothing to show from LTE. With the emergence of LTE devices, we hope to see real life comparisons between the 2 where the results speak for themselves.

Just a month ago, Samsung has released a LTE/3G USB Modem and we shall expect more LTE device from the Korean maker soon.

YTL Comms to cover UTAR Kampar campus with 4G WiMAX

Posted:  July 31, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

YTL Communications has signed a MoA (Memorandum of Agreement) with UTAR (Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman) Kampar, Perak to offer in-campus WiMAX coverage. Similar to its announcement with UTM, Skudai in Johor, this will be the 2nd campus under YTL’s Education Partner Programme (EPP) which offers Free 4G WiMAX service of 300MB/month to university students. The Kampar campus has 12,000 students and it is believed that the programme with extend to other campuses as well.

YTL is one of the 4 WiMAX operators in Malaysia alongside P1, AMAX and RedTone. They believe in launching Malaysia’s first nationwide WiMAX service as oppose of other operator’s roll out in phases. While they have yet to launch WiMAX commercially, they have focused instead on university collaboration in these recent months. Nobody knows when they are going to launch as we foresee them failing to meet its coverage targets again.

We believe everybody is waiting for YTL’s hyped up WiMAX experience but sadly they haven’t delivered anything to date. We sincerely hope YTL can prove themselves capable of rolling out WiMAX else their 4G promise is nothing but hot air.

Rumour: RIM making Blackberry Tablet – BlackPad?

Posted:  July 31, 2010   By: soyacincau   2 comments

A few days back, it was reported that RIM had purchased the domain name Blackpad.com. This sparked rumours that a possible new Blackberry tablet/ipad-like device is in the works.

A blackberry tablet was rumoured couple of months ago which said to feature a 8.9″ screen and connects via Bluetooth and WiFi only. It is also said that the focus is towards multimedia, ebooks or basically a tablet for the home, considering it lacks 3G cellular connectivity. This is a totally different product from the usual Blackberry range of products.

Nothing is concrete at the moment but we are eager to see what Blackberry could do with a tablet format which is currently dominated by iPads and with Android making an entrance soon.

HTC EVO 4G gets Froyo, Moto Droid/Milestone next week

Posted:  July 31, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

While HTC users in China get to enjoy Android 2.2 Froyo on the current HTC Android devices, HTC EVO 4G users have officially gotten their Froyo update in the US. This makes it the 2nd phone to get Froyo after Nexus One over that side of the world.

The new update gave the EVO 4G similar Android 2.2 features plus a few stuff from HTC, such as a Flashlight app, updates on FM Radio, MMS and Photo Gallery apps. Android Central has a detailed list of the new changes in their EVO 4G Froyo post. As mentioned earlier, we should be expecting HTC’s Froyo update for the rest of us anytime soon.

For those who are having Android’s best selling Motorola Droid/Milestone,
an update is expected to come next week. Verizon, the official carrier for the Moto Droid in the US has updated its support page in time for the upgrade.

We should be expecting more announcements of Froyo roll out in the next couple of days. Samsung too has announced that the Galaxy S is getting Froyo by September. So far, the only quiet one is Sony Ericsson which seems to be stuck with Android 1.6 until today.

This is it folks! Q3 is showtime for Froyo.

HTC starts rolling out Froyo update, starting with HTC Desire?

Posted:  July 29, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

This isn’t official but it came from a tweet by HTC’s European representative. The roll out is reported to begin with the HTC Desire today in batches due to limited bandwidth.

Last month, we mentioned that HTC Desire, Legend and Wildfire are expected to get Froyo in Q3, so the release is pretty much on time, if it really comes true. Leaked version for the HTC Droid Incredible with HTC Sense had surfaced yesterday which lead us to believe that HTC should have its Android 2.2 Froyo update ready by now.

Let’s hope this is not a miscommunication of another HTC Staff. Previously HTC Singapore had mentioned that HTC Legend is not getting Froyo but had deleted that comment after getting substantial attention.

Posted:  July 28, 2010   By: soyacincau   1 comment

Hotlink has finally introduced a daily blackberry prepaid package for RM2.50/day. This comes shortly after DiGi’s introduction of its RM2/day daily blackberry service.

For the extra 50 sen, you’ll get a generous 200MB/day data usage as compared to DiGi’s 100MB. To activate, just dial *100#, select Internet and BlackBerry Internet Service. The daily package is renewed automatically.

Similar to DiGi and XpaX, this is only applicable within Blackberry Service inclusive of Email, IM, Social Networking and web browsing. If you use the typical UNET APN or for internet tethering, you will be charged separately.

Read up the FAQ or head to the Hotlink Blackberry page for more details.

Motorola fights back iPhone 4, mocks the need for bumper

Posted:  July 28, 2010   By: soyacincau   1 comment

After having Motorola Droid X included on Apple’s Antenna Attenuation site, Motorola fights back again with another ad. This time it disses iPhone 4′s need to wear a bumper and proudly mentions its vast experience in making phones.

This is the 2nd one after its first version that obviously made fun of phones that doesn’t allow you to hold the phone any way you liked.

If you can’t see the text above, the copy below the phone is written as follows:

At Motorola, we believe a customer shouldn’t have to dress up their phone for it to work properly. That’s why the DROID X comes with a dual antenna design. The kind that allows you to hold the phone any way you like to make crystal clear calls without a bulky phone jacket. For us it’s just one of those things that comes as a given when you’ve been making mobile phones for over 30 years.

Android 2.2 Froyo leaked for Droid Incredible & Galaxy S

Posted:  July 28, 2010   By: soyacincau   No comments

As we enter Q3 for this year, we should be closer to Android 2.2 Froyo upgrades for existing devices. For those who can’t wait, we have leaked versions to play with. Today, the latest leaks are revealed for HTC Droid Incredible & Samsung Galaxy S!

For the Droid Incredible, the leaked Froyo comes with HTC Sense so it is pretty close to the real thing. It is reported that all features are working. Head over to XDA forums or download it directly.

For Samsung Galaxy S, the leaked version will be made available at Samsung Firmware World but at 12 o’clock AMSTERDAM time today. At time of this post, it is not available yet so you might want to check later in the evening. This is only for European, Asian and Arabic versions not for the multi-carrier variant Galaxy S versions in the US.

As always, flashing unofficial firmware is at your own risk. With more leaked versions coming up, we should be expecting the real deal to come anytime soon.
