Facebook Zero on DiGi, Free if you got the right settings

Posted:  June 21, 2010   By: soyacincau   6 comments

As announced earlier, Facebook Zero offers free access on selected Telcos and DiGi is the first to offer such feature in Malaysia. Simple enough, accessing via 0.facebook.com offers free access on your mobile phone.

However the truth is that it may not be necessary free to some users. There are some users who complained that they got charged for accessing Facebook Zero. DiGi finally explained that Facebook Zero is free only if you got the right APN in use.

They have revised their Facebook Zero promo page with a warning that Facebook Zero is free if you are using digiwap as APN. Here’s the thing we dislike, how many users out there are aware of what APN they are using? Plus most newer smartphones may not have a dedicated WAP browser but instead rely on diginet for web browsing.

So DiGi users beware! If you want free access, make sure your phone’s browser runs on digiwap, else you’ll be hitting the max RM5 per day data charge for prepaid.

Maxis offering Galaxy S up for review

Posted:  June 21, 2010   By: ccsoya   26 comments

We’re not agreeable about this reviewer program that Maxis ran in conjunction with the launch of the Desire.

From what we’ve gathered, the social media people at Maxis “picked” a selection of bloggers to review the Desire. They we’re given a few guidelines and at the end of the day if their review is good, they will win the review phone. The program reeks of bribery if you ask us. The notion of doing a review with “guidelines” and a prize is just wrong. Reviews should be impartial, full of facts and help the consumer make an informed decision on a purchase.

The Maxis 10 reviews are far from that in our opinion.

We’ll be fair, concept wise, the program is good. To identify bloggers and offer them review units to get the social media space talking about the device. It’s a good concept, but the execution is horrendous. The reviews are full of errors, lack quality and doesn’t really tell you anything worthwhile noting.

Actually, for the Desire program, we were looking forward to two reviews from the selected ten blogs. @benjern and @SmashPop were selected and we’ll say it, these guys know their stuff, so why no review from them? Both mentioned in their tweets that they we’re pretty stoked about being chosen but after that, there was nary a post from them.

Did Ben and SmashPop pulled out of the program? If they did, why? Was it because the term of the program was too restrictive for them to do a proper review? We can’t say for certain but it most probably was the the reason.

But it seems that the people at Maxis thinks that the program was a success because they are running a similar campaign to promote the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S which is slated for June 25.

So if you’re interested to be amongst the 10 reviewers chosen, head on over the to the survey site to be in the running. Unlike the previous Maxis 10 Reviewer program, to be in the running for the Galaxy S, you’ll need to submit a video and tell Maxis why you deserve to review the Galaxy S. Also what would be useful — the ability to turn back time. Take a look at the picture above, the closing date was last year 25th of June 2009.  You might need some help from @Doc__Brown with that.

Moving forward, can we expect a similar program when the iPhone 4 comes to Malaysia? If there is one, we hope Maxis polishes up the execution of the program so that it really does produce quality content that many will enjoy reading and most importantly, get good information out of.

Apple will be adding another 24 countries in August and in September another 44 countries that will be getting the iPhone 4.

The question on everyone’s mind (well, in Malaysia at least) is when and which telco will be bringing in the iPhone 4. We can tell you right now, its not going to be July. We’re shooting for August and our money is on Maxis to be the first Malaysian telco to offer the iPhone.

HTC Desire: Coming to DiGi by the end of this week?

Posted:  June 21, 2010   By: ccsoya   6 comments

Ok it’s Monday but we’re already looking forward to the coming Sunday.

Why? Well because by the end of this week it will be exactly one month after the launch of the HTC Desire. And if you followed our live coverage during the Desire launch on May 27, you will note that the exclusivitydeal with Maxis for the Desire is only for a month.

After that it’s pretty much a free for all, with any phone dealers or telco being able to sell the Desire.

So, what can we expect? Keep your eyes locked onto DiGi’s website, if we know DiGi, there may be something for HTC Desire prospects to look forward to from DiGi soon. Perhaps a similar offering along the lines of the DG Smart Plan? We can’t be certain for now but the possibility is there.

If the HTC Desire does come to DiGi how much will it cost? Assuming the Desire comes to DiGi, you can expect a hefty subsidy, with the device being priced at very close to what Maxis is offering right now.

And another thing, last week, Maxis opened up pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S, slating the launch date at 25 June. We’re wondering, will DiGi follow suit? Right now it’s hard to tell but maybe.

Nexus One Android 2.2 vs HTC Android 2.1 Hands on Comparison

Posted:  June 21, 2010   By: soyacincau   3 comments

If you’re an Android user or looking at buying one, you would be familiar with the word Froyo. Froyo which is the codename for Android 2.2 has been the buzzword lately for anything Android. So far, the Android 2.2 is only available for Google’s own Nexus One while other Android handsets are still stuck with Android 2.1 Eclair or below.

So what’s the big deal of Android 2.2? Does it make a big difference from its previous Android 2.1? We compare a Nexus One updated with Android 2.2 and a HTC Legend running on Android 2.1 plus the extra enhancements that HTC has added in.

Home Tab
First, you’ll notice a new home screen. Now it comes with dedicated tab for phone, programs & Browser. Previously there’s only a single tab to show programs and you’ll need to make a shortcut for Phone and Browser on the home screen space. Compared to HTC’s version of Android 2.1, looks like both home screens are on par now.
