Update: TM UniFi’s Monthly usage is capped on daily basis.

There have been various debates on Download Caps after the release of TM UniFi’s High Speed Broadband Plans. Many have argued that High Speed broadband is pointless if TM caps on one’s download capabilities.
TM UniFi’s lowest entry VIP5 of 5Mbps comes with 60GB maximum download bandwidth per month while its higher VIP10 comes with 90GB and highest VIP20 with 120GB. No download cap applies for the more expensive business/commercial packages.
TM reaction to complaints
With lots of people raging online about TM’s unfair practice and some users even calling for boycott against UniFi, TM immediately announced on their twitter the following:
NO volume cap 4 all #unifi packages 4 now.Decision due to public feedback.TMwill only monitor usage pattern 4 time being
Many people immediately rejoiced citing the voice of twitter have won over giant ISP. The fact of the matter is, this announcement is nothing new to us. It has been known that UniFi subscribers will not have their usage capped until at least June this year as mentioned in our previous post.

TM’s official twitter @TMCorp has mentioned that Streamyx’s 4Mbps Combo or better known as Streamyx Blockbuster Deal subscription will reduced from RM160 to RM140/month.
At the moment, Streamyx Combo 2Mbps is offered at RM140/month and 4Mbps at RM160/month.

If 4Mbps were to be priced at RM140/month, obviously TM would need to relook into the pricing for the other Streamyx packages as well. TM could either upgrade all existing Streamyx Combo up one level or reduce all monthly subscription by RM20 each.
Seriously if you’re an existing 4Mbps Streamyx customer in a TM UniFi area, we would highly recommend adding additional RM9 to your now reduced RM140/month subscription to enjoy 5Mbps connectivity and extra IPTV content at RM149/month. As mentioned in our official price plan post, those who upgrade will not be charged extra subscription and no download quota capping until June.

UPDATE: Official Price Plans are out.
TM has finally launched its new High Speed Broadband brand called UniFi at Merdeka Square this evening. UniFi is a convergence of 3 services namely broadband, video content (IPTV) and telephony.
IPTV is something exciting to look forward to as it is seen as a serious 2nd Pay TV operator. Just recently it had announced agreement with 20 content providers and this is expected to grow provided TM is aggressive in getting more channels. At time of launch, there will be 22 channels, video on demand and other interactive services.
3 packages are available with speeds of 5Mbps, 10Mbps and 20Mbps. This positions UniFi right above Streamyx that tops at 4Mbps. For its IPTV Content, a dedicated 8Mbps will be allocated for this purpose in addition to the broadband package. We believe this would allow IPTV content to stream on an exclusive bandwidth without interfering with broadband usage.
Pricing is not available at the moment but monthly subscription is rumoured to start from RM150 to RM300. An official price plan is expected to be released tomorrow. Official Price starts from RM149, details here.
Availability is still limited to 4 exchange areas namely Shah Alam, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail (TTDI), Bangsar and Subang Jaya. According to TM, UniFi is now available to 311,000 premises in those 4 areas. It is expected that UniFi will expand to over 48 exchange areas by end 2010 which allows 750,000 premises potentially connected to UniFi.
More details tomorrow.

P1 W1MAX has launched its prepaid USB broadband called the W1GGY prepaid. The prepaid market is big especially when consumers need broadband on the go on a need to use basis. Most telcos has recognise such demand and we’ve seen various prepaid 3G broadband products as of late. Wanting a slice of that market, P1 has become the first WiMAX operator in Malaysia to offer prepaid as well.

Struggling 3G Telco, U Mobile has finally gotten into the news again with the announcement of Singapore’s Technology Telemedia to invest 33% stake in the company. U Mobile is majority owned by UTV – U Television Sdn Bhd with Tan Sri Vincent Tan as chairman. The total investment is said to be worth over RM1 billion.
After its bad experience with the Koreans & Japanese, Tan Sri Vincent Tan has clarified that the deal with STT is different from KT Freetel and NTT Docomo. STT does not have an sell-back option if the deal doesn’t go well as planned which was obviously practised by its former strategic partners. The big man said it in his own words, jokingly: “Once bitten, forever shy.”
With this new investment, it will definitely give hope to U Mobile to gain some grounds in the telco industry. In terms of dealers, they have already made in roads nationwide and to date they have captured about 4% of the telco market. What they need now are exciting products and services to stay relevant as the 4th 3G operator in Malaysia.
They have a lot of catching up to do and we look forward for a come back.

P1′s DV 230 WiMAX Modem is one of the first WiMAX with WiFi modem that’s easy to use thanks to its simple plug and play approach. The only technical bit for the user is to enter the predefined WEP password which is uniquely customised for each USB WiFi Module.
It looks all good and dandy but there’s just one small problem. We found out that the “unique” WEP password isn’t that unique after all.

DiGi has started pre-ordering of the iPhone 3G. Options available are iPhone 3G with 8GB and iPhone 3GS with 16GB and 32GB capacities.
Pick-up locations are currently limited to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu only. Actual pricing and plans are not available yet. It is also good to know that this pre-ordering is also open to non-DiGi customers however one would require to sign up for one upon collection.
We believe DiGi is trying to find out how many people are willing to prebook by asking more details from protential customers. Let’s hope that DiGi will be able to release iPhone stock in a shorter timeframe compared to Maxis.
Click here to pre-order yours now. Remember, this is only until 18th March 2010.

Streamyx has sweeten up their offer with the new BlockBuster Deals that is obviously pushing their voice business.
This could also be seen as a Streamyx retention campaign as well as to encourage more usage of voice by offering FREE Calls to all TM Fixed Line and attractive mobile call rates.
There are 4 Broadband + Voice plans and 3 Voice only plans on offer.
