MWC 2012: Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD with 1920×1200 display

At MWC, Huawei has also revealed its MediaPad 10 FHD tablet. Just like its current product line up, Huawei is claiming it as the World’s First 10-inch quad core tablet that runs on its own proprietory 1.5GHz quad core processor. The biggest highlight of the MediaPad 10 FHD is its 1080p HD 10″ IPS screen that pushes a massive 1920×1200 resolution. In terms of connectivity, it supports up to 84Mbps connectivity with HSPA+ with support for LTE networks.
It comes with a 8MP camera at the back and a front facing 1.3MP. In the press release, it mentioned having 2GB of RAM for storage, which we incline to believe is a typo. Overall it weighs 598 grams and has a thickness of 8.8mm.
We are having trouble digesting its World First claims on the MediaPad 10 FHD. The thinner and lighter 10.1″ ASUS Transformer Prime which is available here is already running quad-core and now there’s the Transformer Infinity (also known as TF700) which also does 1080p display. Unless of course Huawei’s “first” is specifically referring to the exact size of 10″. The Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD is said to be rolling out globally in Q2 this year.

MWC 2012: Huawei Ascend D Quad – World’s fastest smart phone

After announcing the ultra slim Ascend P1 S, Huawei is raising the bar with its Ascend D Quad which claims to be the world’s fastest smart phone. In terms of specs, the Ascend D Quad is challenging the big boys of smart phones with its own K3V2 Quad Core 1.2GHz/1.5GHz processor.
Over at the front, the Ascend D has a high resolution 4.5″ 720p HD display which gives a pixel density of 330ppi. That’s higher than the iPhone 4S at 326ppi. Other details revealed include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, Dolby 5.1 surround sound, a 8MP BSI Camera that supports 1080p HD video recording and a front facing 1.3MP camera. The Ascend D comes with a 1800mAh battery and overall has a thickness of 8.9mm.
Apart from the Ascend D, there are other variants as well in the series. The Ascend D quad XL offers similar hardware but instead comes with an extended 2500mAh battery for longer usage. Finally there’s the Ascend D1 which runs on a lower 1.5GHz dual-core processor with a lower capacity 1670mAh battery. The Ascend D quad will be available in Q2 this year.

MWC 2012: HTC One Series Compared

The HTC One series will be coming to Malaysia with all 3 having different specs and features. As usual, we compared the HTC One X, One S and One V specs and figures for easy reference.
On the processor aspect, the HTC One X runs on quad core, while the One S comes with 2 and lastly the One V runs only on a single core. In terms of OS, all 3 runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The HTC One V is probably the only Ice Cream Sandwich device launched with a single core right now.
In terms of dimensions, the HTC One S is the thinnest at only 7.8mm, followed by the HTC One X at 8.9mm and lastly the One V at 9.24mm. For storage, the HTC One X and One S doesn’t come with a expandable microSD slot however it is available on the One V. It is also interesting to note that the HTC One X comes with NFC support.

UPDATE: HTC One X, One S and One V specification and features compared.
We’re pretty sure that many of you are looking forward to the launch of the HTC One series here in Malaysia. We’re pretty stoked about the three devices as well. HTC look like they’ve gotten their act together and will be bringing a lot of awesome for this year, and that’s always a good thing for all of us gadget junkies.
At the launch, HTC says the One series will begin shipping globally in April. In addition, the devices are expected to be available through more than 140 mobile operators and distributors globally. Are Malaysian telcos included in this list of 140 operators?
Why yes, tipster @TheGadgetGuy18 pointed us to the press release page for the HTC One series and found some interesting nuggets of information — DiGi and Maxis are listed in the 140 mobile operators that will be getting the newly announced HTC devices.
We’ve spoken to a few people in the know and you can definitely expect the One X, S and V to be available here by April. In terms of pricing, we don’t have any information on that yet but the top of the line One X with the quad-core Tegra 3 should not go beyond the RM2.3k mark.

MWC 2012: ASUS PadFone with smart phone + tablet + keyboard dock

At MWC, ASUS has revealed its ASUS Padfone which has been teased and shown for the longest time. This time around, the Taiwanese maker has enhanced the overall package by offering a 3-in-1 solution: Smart Phone + Tablet + Keyboard dock.
The main focus is the smart phone which is powered by Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz dual-core snapdragon S4 processor with 1GB of RAM and storage between 16GB-64GB built in. For display, it has a 4.3″ qHD Super AMOLED that supports a resolution of 960×540. The phone has a 8MP f/2.2 camera at the back and a front facing VGA camera for video chat. It weighs 129 grams and is 9.2mm thick. In terms of battery, it is rated at 1,520mAh.
Plugging it into the tablet’s “Fone” dock, it offers a familiar 1280×800 IPS screen and a front facing 1.3MP camera. With the phone docked, the tablet uses the phone’s 8MP camera for imaging. In total, both keyboard + phone weighs 724 grams which is rather heavy for a 10.1″ tablet.
There’s not much details about the keyboard dock but based on the photos, it does look like the keyboard dock used in the original ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. Even the front appearance of the tablet looks like the original Transformer as well.
Another nifty new feature is the stylus which can be picked up and used as a handset. We wonder which one would look more silly, talking to an oversized tablet or a pen? The ASUS PadFone runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and no pricing or availability details have been revealed yet.
So is this Smart Phone + Tablet + Keyboard dock solution practical? Having a Smart Phone docked within a tablet looks clean but it does look cumbersome if you just want to take out your phone and make a call the old fashion way. We’ll see how it goes once it is available here.

The Nokia 808 PureView has created a lot of buzz with its epic 41MP camera. A worthy successor of the Nokia N8, the Nokia 808 PureView is a mobile photography marvel that boasts a biggest sensor with the highest megapixel count ever for a smart phone.
Figures aside, let’s take a look at some sample photos that were released by Nokia. The result is simply impressive and the earlier suggested theory behind the teaser was right after all. Head after the break and be amazed! Be warned, the original photos are 10-12MB each.
MWC 2012: ASUS Transformer Pad 300, affordable quad core tablet

ASUS has revealed the Transformer Pad 300 which offers quad-core Android performance at a lower price point. While it maintains the same Tegra 3 processor from the Transformer Prime, the Transformer Pad 300 has a plastic body instead of the premium brushed aluminium. However what you do get is a choice of 3 colours as shown in the photo above.
It still maintains a 10.1″ screen that does 1280×800 and there’s 16GB of on board storage. Just like the Transformer Prime, it also runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
Dimension wise, it is slightly thicker at 9.9mm and weighs 635 gram. All that reduction and shortfalls has made the Transformer Pad 300 US$100 cheaper than the price, which means that it is likely to be priced under RM2000 if it reaches Malaysia.

MWC 2012: Nokia 808 PureView with 41MP sensor

Nokia has finally revealed its super camera phone with the Nokia 808 PureView which was earlier teased as a Nokia N8 successor. The Nokia 808 PureView comes with a colossal 41MP sensor with Carl Zeiss optics which widens the gap with other rival camera phones.
While having a 41MP censor, it actually takes 38MP photos at 4:3 aspect ratio and 34MP photos at 16:9. On most camera phones, zooming in would normally distort the image by over-scaling. With the Nokia 808 Pureview, zooming in for 5MP-8MP will appear lossless, maintaining its true details. For full HD 1080p videos, you could zoom up to 4X without losing any details.
Just like the N8, it comes with Xenon Flash but in addition, it also comes with assisted LED for videoshooting in the dark. For audio, the 808 PureView has Rich Recording that boasts CD-like quality which is capable of recording stereo sound up to 140-145db. That’s 4X louder than conventional mics which is greatly appreciated in extreme audio conditions such as concerts.
On the smart phone aspect, the Nokia 808 runs on Symbian Belle with a 1.3GHz single core processor, 512MB RAM with 16GB of on board storage that’s expandable with microSD. The front features a 4″ AMOLED display that does 640×360 resolution with Gorilla Glass. With a big bulge for the lens, the 808 PureView is 17.95mm thick and weighs 169 grams. There’s also HDMI, DLNA, NFC & a built-in FM Transmitter.
The Nokia 808 PureView is priced at €450 which is about RM1800, and it is expected to ship in May 2012. It’s a pity that it doesn’t run on Windows Phone and the screen resolution of 640×360 is rather low compared to what its camera could do.

MWC 2012: Nokia Lumia 610 & DC-HSPA variant Lumia 900 revealed

Nokia has finally revealed the Nokia Lumia 610, an entry level Windows Phone for the masses. At a lower price point of €189 which is about RM770, this makes really affordable for people to get on the Windows Phone bandwagon. While it also runs on Windows Phone 7.5, the Lumia 610 is actually running on a different variant called Tango that allows it to run on devices with lower RAM and processor while still maintaining an optimal user experience.
In terms of specs, the Lumia 610 runs on a single core 800MHz Qualcomm processor with 256MB RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a 1,300mAh battery. At the front, it has a 3.7″ WVGA TFT display which pushes 800×480 resolution. In terms of imaging, it comes with a 5MP camera with assisted LED flash.
The Lumia 610 comes with a choice of 4 colours – white, cyan, magenta & black. It is expected to start shipping in Q2 2012.
We already know that the Galaxy Note 10.1 will make its debut at MWC. Samsung is shouting it from the rooftops. No surprises there. What we don’t know is what kind of hardware the Galaxy Note 10.1 will be packing.
Samsung is scheduled to hold a press conference at MWC today 1600hrs, so it won’t be long till we know for sure but ahead of the event, information on the specifications of the Galaxy Note 10.1 has already been leaked out.
The Galaxy Note 10.1 is rumoured to have a 1.4Ghz dual-core processor and run on Android 4.0. On board memory options are the standard 16GB, 32GB and 64GB variants. In addition, the device is expected to pack a 7,000mAh battery. Essentially, the Galaxy Note 10.1 is packing the same processor as the Galaxy Tab 7.7 but with a battery capacity similar to that of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If the leaked specs are true then this makes the Galaxy Note 10.1, the most powerful tablet in Samsung’s arsenal.
The Galaxy Note 10.1 is also said to feature an improved S-Pen design that offers the same tactility as a real pen with the addition of an eraser at the rear end. There’s also a new split screen feature to make the most out of the additional screen real-estate. The Feature divides the 10.1-inch display into two halves to allow users to take notes on one side and display content on the other.
We have to point out though that none of this information is confirmed at the moment, so we’ll have to wait for a couple more hours for the Samsung press conference to get the final word.
