OK. Early last year, we saw ASUS take a stab at smashing the smartphone camera scene wide open with the introduction of a handset that had 3X optical zoom but had a form-factor that didn’t equal gaffer taping a smartphone to your DSLR. It was an interesting idea, but, as we now know, the device wasn’t a smashing success.
There were many reasons why the ZenFone Zoom flopped, so this year, when ASUS invited me to an undisclosed location in Pahang to try its successor — the brand new ZenFone 3 Zoom — my mission was to find out if they’ve learnt their lessons…and not get killed in some jungle.
Announced during CES 2017, the ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom is now officially available in Malaysia. This replaces the previous ASUS ZenFone Zoom and it comes with a dual-camera set up that has 2.3X Optical Zoom.
The ASUS ZenFone 3 Zoom is much improved over its original ZenFone Zoom. Announced at CES 2017, the new photography-centric device is thinner, sleeker and it packs a large 5,000mAh battery. If this is a device you’re looking for, it isn’t as expensive as you think.
ASUS’s ZenFone Zoom was an interesting smartphone. It had a full 3x optical zoom lens array wrapped in a smartphone body that didn’t feel incredibly bulky — which was rather refreshing…even if the camera and phone itself was unimpressive. Its follow up ZenFone 3 Zoom, on the other hand, seems a little underwhelming especially in the whole zooming department.
With just two weeks away until CES 2017, ASUS has just released its teaser video for its upcoming Zennovation launch event. Now we can confirm that they would be launching not one but two new ZenFones to kick off 2017.
With the full ASUS ZenFone 3 family hitting the market, the Taiwanese maker is about to release another smartphone that focuses on photography. Looking at the current lineup, this could be the successor of its current ASUS ZenFone Zoom.
