With 5G expected to roll out in the next year or two, OPPO is taking video calls to the next level. Their Global Research Institute in Shenzhen have just demonstrated the world’s first 5G Video Call using 3D structured light technology.
Huawei launched released their Huawei 5G customer-premises equipment (CPE) today at MWC 2018, marking it the world’s first commercial terminal device to support 3GPP telecommunication standards for 5G.
Huawei’s got a few new products this MWC, but we can’t say they weren’t unexpected. With a brand new MediaPad and what looks like Huawei’s attempt to tackle the MacBook Pro, they’re also debuting their 3GPP 5G CPE.
MWC 2018 is happening next month and we expect Motorola to reveal a couple of smartphones like it did last year. Ahead of the big reveal, it appears that Motorola’s new lineup ranging from its affordable Moto G to its flagship Moto Z series has been leaked in its full glory. The folks at DroidLife have gotten several images along with hardware details of selected models.
Malaysians really love their mobile internet and our data consumption is set to increase exponentially in the coming years. According to Maxis’ Q2 2017 report, average data usage on their network has almost doubled from 3.7GB/month to 7.0GB/month year-on-year. In addition, Ericsson predicts that mobile data traffic will increase by 11X for South East Asia and Oceania by 2022.
While our telcos are continuously upgrading their network, there’s one major problem that would hinder our demand for more data and it’s up in the air. Based on UTM’s report on our mobile broadband development, Malaysia needs more spectrum in order to fulfil the growing need for mobile data. If Malaysia doesn’t take appropriate action, the quality of our mobile internet would deteriorate.

It will take at least 3 years before 5G is ready for commercial service but U Mobile is now a step closer with its commercial roll out of 4.5G. This is the first in Malaysia and it’s made possible in collaboration with Huawei. With 4.5G, U Mobile promises twice the speed of 4G on supporting devices.
Celcom and Ericsson today had teamed up to showcase Malaysia’s first 5G trial. Not only this is the first in the country but it’s also the first 5G trial to be conducted in South East Asia utilising the higher 28GHz band.
Celcom aims to be a technology leader and they have invested over RM1 billion in the past year on its network. To cater for growing connectivity demands, Celcom has introduced its new Lightning Fast LTE network which will be rolled out in the months to come.
Utilising 4×4 MIMO and 256 QAM, Celcom claims to be the first telco in Malaysia to deliver ultra-fast download speeds of up to 480Mbps.
5G is still a long way go but the folks at Qualcomm wants to enable gigabit wireless connectivity today. Their new X16 LTE is the first commercially announced modem that’s designed to deliver up to fibre optic 1Gbps speeds over today’s 4G LTE networks. That’s LTE Category 16 speeds, versus the current Cat 9 (600Mbps) and Cat 6 (300Mbps) standards that are supported on current flagship smartphones.
