UPDATE: vivo V9 full hardware specs revealed.
Almost every other Chinese smartphone maker has jumped onto the “notch” bandwagon and the latest participant is vivo. Their next selfie-centric smartphone, the vivo V9, has been revealed ahead of its supposed launch that’s happening at the end of this month. This will succeed the vivo V7/V7+ and it is a major step up in both display and hardware.
The FIFA World Cup 2018 is taking place in June this year. Since vivo is the official smartphone sponsor, they are currently running a selfie contest where they are giving away a FIFA World Cup ticket to a lucky winner. The interesting part of the announcement is the mention of their new vivo V9 which appears to be a 24MP Selfie smartphone.
This would succeed its current V7/V7+ series which was announced just six months ago. While the V7 and V7+ came with a FullView 18:9 display, this new model will feature the iPhone X “Notch”.
After showcasing its capabilities at CES 2018, vivo has finally revealed a commercial device with an in-display fingerprint sensor. This is the world’s smartphone that allows you to unlock with your fingerprint on the display itself.
With newer smartphones being introduced with “FullView” displays, most manufacturers are still trying to find an ideal place for a fingerprint sensor. Samsung had gone with a rear-mounted unit while Apple has ditched it completely on the iPhone X. Interestingly, Huawei had managed to squeeze one on the bottom chin of its Huawei Mate 10 and honor View10.
It’s no secret that Chinese smartphone maker, vivo, wants to be the first to embed a fingerprint sensor on the screen itself. Last year they had a showcase using Qualcomm’s Sense ID technology and now they want to convince the world that they are one step closer in introducing one on a phone that you can actually buy.
The recently launched vivo V7 is now more affordable with a price cut of RM100 in Malaysia. At RM1,199, it slightly cheaper than its 18:9 smartphone rivals such as the Huawei Nova 2i and OPPO F5.
